Yes you can it involves a bit of soldering and I think there are replacement cases. There’s a member here does it for people but don’t know if he’s still doing it. |

I've not used my spare key for nearly 8 years, do you think it's beyond recharge? |

Good chance the battery is gone. But it will still work as a spare... 1. You can unlock the door with the manual key. 2. The fob will work in the ignition once inserted, no battery ever required for that. 3. Caveat #1: IIRC keys will be disable if not used for a period of time (assumed lost)... so to keep it "active" you need to start the car (or just turn on the electronics) with it like once a month. Once it goes inactive you can re-activate it by first inserting a good key into the slot(start the car?), remove and then insert the deactivated key. The car will then get re-activate the old key, having validated that it's in your possession. 4. Caveat #2: As I understand it, if you've ever acquired a replacement new key, and did not get your spare key programmed at the same time, the spare key is permanently de-activated. When a new key is programmed, ALL previous/spare keys need to programmed as well at that time. I recently bought a new key and was able to also program my old, dying key for use as a spare when I programmed the new one. Just need to remember to use it once a month now to keep it awake. Think I'll go do that right now... |
