Wheel Nut Check

Have you checked your wheel nuts still fit in the wrench socket that sits with the jack?

When the nuts corrode, the stainless steel? casing expands meaning you can't engage the wrench.
You're most likely to encounter this when you trying to change the wheel on a dark rainy night , miles from anywhere!

The service guys, I'm sure , just use a 22mm impact socket for ease of use which is oversize , so unless you check you may never know until you do, so to speak.

Andy,

That's an interesting point you are making.

Obviously sockets are larger than the nuts/bolt head or a hammer would be needed every time.

My 22 mm (Edit make that 21 mm) impact socket is what I use to remove the lug nuts.

Are you saying that a typical (non impact) socket would measure smaller than the impact socket
(comparing 6 point to 6 point)?

For reference I did remove the lug nuts for a stranded Ford Mustang owner (flat tire) using the Land Rover supplied wrench (because I couldn't find the wrench in the ford). I knew that FORD was the parent company at the time that I bought my Land Rover but the Mustang owner had no idea. So I guess my lug wrench works.

And I perpetuated the LAND ROVER myth "LAND ROVERS are complex difficult to maintain and expensive to own but if you find yourself in a place where you need one you will be hard pressed to find a better tool"

Having said that you make a good point.

Thanks for the tip

Paul

The correct socket size is 21mm for the nuts.
Best to use a hex (6 sided) socket rather than a bi-hex though.

My 2014 Freelander 2 also suffers from this issue, and I have to use a 22mm socket to remove as 21mm won't fit them now. Has anyone fitted open ended M14x1.5 lug nuts (wheel nuts) with the correct seat taper such as these https://www.demon-tweeks.com/grayston-open...lsrc=aw.ds and then used wheel nut covers. Like VW and other manufactures. I am looking at this option as the original sealed type appear to fail within a year or so.

I just checked my Impact socket vs regular socket

I don't have a 6 point 21 mm regular (but I do have a deep impact 21 mm) socket so I measured a 19 mm

19 mm regular socket measured 19.26 mm

19 mm impact socket measured 19.25 mm

For my money those are equal.

I misunderstood the original poster.

I didn't realize that he was saying that the Tyre shop, mechanics, etc. just uses a 22 mm instead of the correct 21 mm

Where I live rust isn't really a problem so I expect to use 21 mm for the next 20 years or so.

I pulled off a lug nut to check and it has a captive floating washer, its a quality lug nut. Credit to Land Rover for not building my SUV with low quality parts. Apologies to my Freel2 friends that live in corrosive environments and are less impressed with the choices made by the dedicated Land Rover team in the UK.

Take care

Paul
