Looking to find some secondhand roof rails for my FL2 with panoramic roof, can someone tell me the difference with those with solid roof, so I make sure I get the correct ones.

I have no connection with the seller of this item.

Make sure it has the 4 rear & 2 front adaptors to screw the M6 bolts in otherwise you need to buy these & I believe they are not the cheapest parts. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

That one was incomplete. as said in Lightwaters post you really do need the six fittings

I bought a cheap set of eBay and sent them back. Didn’t fit the car. Gaps between the feet and the roof and didn’t even drive it before the end caps fell off and I had to re drill the thing to line the mounts up.

You really need to buy GENUINE parts. There are copies out there, some say these are OK , others - like you - are not impressed.

agreed. or custom. Due to a motivation inspired by our friends in AU, I stick a lot of weight up there at times. I don’t think I’d be trusting my expensive toys and the health and risk to others by sticking on some cheap aftermarket solution. Guy Pensa

I bought the cheaper rails & they were never quite right. Lost one cover & had to buy a whole set. The new set of covers are originals & a couple of covers fitted, & couple didn't fit overly well.

I have used a bit of black clothe tape to stick them on.

I also bought the cheaper mud flaps, lost one, replaced them with originals & at the time bought a spare set but the first set of originals have lasted.

Lesson learnt, buy actual originals, it's cheaper in the long run.


Having said that are corrugated road & heavy loads break roof racks. I have seen plenty of "outback" roof racks broken, & heard of roofs been broken due to the high stresses caused by corrugated roads. Let tyres down & drive slower.


The modifications I have made I believe would have needed to be done with any roof rack.

I have bought the original cross bars, 2 sets, so that is 4 cross bars on the car. That is after a replacing a roof platform, to reduce net weight by 16kg. Get the actual original cross bars. Same with the rails, it will save money in the long run.



The actual original crossbars have the Land Rover logo, the plastic end cap is more square, & there is no key lock which I believe is on some after market pretend originals.

I do agree that 17s work out well. But I do get the sizable sidewall with my ridiculous oversized tires on the 18s. Now, if there was only a clever ladder system to aid my loading/unloading on the roof...
My winter tires are on the 17s. ( I don’t find the pirelli A/T tires v good on icwe). And as Murphy should have it, there are some covered parking garages that I can’t get into with my BIG tires and a cleared off roof rack.
