Freelander 2 vs Discovery sport

Hi there. Thinking of changing my 2009 Freelander 2 HSE with 18" alloys, will the spare fit the Disco Sport HSE 2015/17 ta.

It will fit but make sure the DS you're looking at has the spare wheel well to carry it.
I think 7 seaters and those specced with factory towbar don't. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Thanks for that. That's a bit silly int it. What happens if you shred a tyre. Are they not slung underneath the back end or can the rear seats be removed to fit a spare? Do they actually do a 5 seater?

Tyre foam or a space saver I believe. Yes 5 seater is made. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

My DS was a 7 seater and had factory towbar and had a fullsize spare. I think that basically if it does not already have a spare wheel then you cannot retro fit it as it will not have the spare wheel well. The exhaust is also different on the vehicles with a spare wheel as it has 2 separate backboxes whereas the non spare wheel vehicle has one back box that runs across the car behind the bumper. Best option is to buy one with the spare wheel already! Thumbs Up

There are a lot less 5 seaters than 7 seaters, so you might be faced with a limited number of SH cars.
If the car wasn't specified at build with a full sized spare, then the wheel well is too shallow to accept one.
If you buy a 7 seater and take out the rear seats (couple of hours), the wheel well is there to accept a space saver spare. Done this on our previous and current DS, shrink wrapped the seats, top shelf in garage, simple job to refit.

The underslung version requires a completely different exhaust (removes large rear box and has two smaller rear silencers), towbar/no towbar, fixed towbar/deployable towbar all matter.

Why would a caravanner tow without a spare as glue isn't recommended for towing?, one of the main assets of the FL2 and DS is its towing capacity. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

I can just imagine the stress of a puncture on a French motorway with no spare! I'd have one strapped to the roof as lightwater does rather than risk it.
When we were buying my wife's car (VW Tiguan) we looked at and immediately ruled out a BMW X1 because it had no spare wheel and nowhere to put one. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I have been on the lookout for a petrol DS 5 seater with proper spare for some time. I want a light coloured interior and sensible wheels (i think that 18" is the minimum) and most I have seen seem to be coming with 20" alloys which wouldn't cope with the potholes around here. So far no luck. As for taking the rear seats out of a 7 seater and using a space saver I hate to think what a different sized wheel would do to the 4WD system even over a short distance. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Space saver would have same or similar wheel 'height' as originals I would imagine? Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Good luck , LR looked at me as if I was daft when I told them I wanted a 5 seater , Auto , Full size spare , as a new car . That was 5 years ago when they were pretending they had a new world beater and didn’t want to talk discounts !

I doubt if using the space saver as intended will cause any transmission issues . My problem is that if the puncture occurs off-road I want tyres that will get me back to the road so full size ticks all the boxes the same with towing. The same with not wanting to drive at 50mph in a sandwich of 40 tonne artics . I also want tyres that aren’t slung under the vehicle so I’m on my back in the muck if they don’t come out of the carrier as intended . I’ve had that happen on a Clio on the side of a Dual Carrigeway , Hilarious ! .

However , when I bought my Subaru even though there was a full size wheel well in the euro spec cars , no spare was provided as it seems today’s drivers don’t like changing wheels . It goes without saying both my cars now have full size spares carried internally.

The Freelander 2 is indeed quite a difficult vehicle to replace . Shame we’re not going to get the Ford Bronco over here . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

On French motorway tolls .......... you would then be over the 1.85mtr limit ....... and be classed as a 'small van' ...... extra toll charge.

do what Largered did ..... fit a swing away spare wheel carrier, that is neat. Cool

I blame Land Rover (Ford) for not maintaining the spare wheel on the rear door !!!

Just imagine the stress of a puncture on Australia's Great Central Road.

I shove a spare in the boot & a second spare on the roof. With the DS you will have to do what this Suzuki does & stick 2 spares on the roof!
