FL2 Diesel Fuel Filter

Hey all,

I'm seeing conflicting info on You Tube videos re replacing the diesel filter on a Freelander 2. I have the 2013 facelift model 2.2 td4.

Does it need manual priming after fitting? Powerful UK seems to replace one and just left ignition on for a bit and it sorted itself out but most other videos I've watched seem to use a manual pump to pull the fuel through.

Any advice appreciated.

PowerfulUK got it wrong.
Yes, you have to manually prime the pump.
JLR recommend the use of a simple hand bulb pump in series with the fuel filter inlet. Its in the JLR workshop manual - available for free - search "workshop manual".
There are other ways to do it - mentioned in other threads on here. Jules

You only lose a thimble full of fuel from each disconnected line, so if you completely fill the new filter with fuel before fitting, then you don’t need to prime the fuel pump. But if you have a fuel bulb with the right connectors, it’s easier and cleaner to just fit an empty filter, connect a fuel bulb in the line that returns to the tank (rear left viewed from front of car) and pull the fuel through until there are no more air bubbles in the lines.

JLR recommends placing the hand pump on the fuel tank side of the filter and that way any muck gets filtered out on its way to the injectors. Jules

Have you tried the Search button on here?
There are a number of threads about it, one has 4 or 5 pages and has lots of pics to help you.
It’s the thread I used when I changed mine 2013

my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

I would fill the fuel filter before fitting with clean filtered diesel but each to their own.

Yup, used search button many times. No results ref 'are Powerful UK correct' but thanks for the input. Seen pictures and such though so that has been useful.

I might try filling filter with clean fuel. Can the bulb be fitted permanently in the pipe as with many other vehicles? I imagine having to change the fuel filter many times during my ownership so could be easier if it is both doable and safe.

If you’re going to fill the filter before fitting it, you shouldn’t need a fuel bulb. There’s some useful posts under “Fuel Sedimenter Draining on Service” if you haven’t come across them already.

Got you. I should have been more clear there sorry. I was kind of thinking along two seperate paths.

Fill fuel filter with diesel and reconnect vs fitting an empty filter and permanently attaching a bulb to pull the fuel through.

Manually filling the fuel filter is a recipe for disaster, as the injector spray nozzles are microscopic, and easily blocked by particulates that are virtually invisible.
JLR suggest sucking fuel through the system on the tank return line for a reason, as only filtered fuel can pass to the injectors. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

That might work, but why not just do it the way PSA (who made the engine) and JLR say, which doesn't risk injector damage through contaminated fuel. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

As per image above. Assume from the workshop manual. That seems to indicate the bulb pump needs a one way valve, is that the purpose of the arrow?

All the cheap ones on amazon seem to lack that part if it is critical.
