I notice the passenger side rear tail light flickers, ONLY when tested without the engine running, seems okay otherwise, but, I was going to see if it was something wrong with the bulb and swap sides with the opposite bulb . . .

update, checked the wiring over and it all looks okay, plugged the lamp unit back in and the side light does not come on at all

so instead of trying to swap a bulb, I swapped left to right rear lamp units as the socket is the same on both, the previous dodgy tail light works on the other side, and the previously good light fails to work on the passenger side.

Therefore lamp units okay, fault somewhere on the car, is there a fuse for the tail lights? If so would it be correct to assume it covers both sides not just one? 2017 SEAT Ateca 4drive 2.0 xcellence (May 2022 -

From the wiring diagram the sidelights are fed from FETs - transistors, a single transistor feeds the left front and rear. Another FET feeds right front and rear.

Here is the fun bit, the transistors actually measure current, so insufficient current (blown bulb) and the system knows and could actually tell you - that it doesn't is just meanness on LRs part. Too much current = short circuit or too large a bulb 9accidentally put a 25W bulb where a 5W bulb should be.

So too much current and you have two options,
(1) cut the power until the system is cycled and try again - so ignition off and on.
(2) pulse the power until either you are satisfied that there is a real fault then got to (1), or just pulse the power until the bulb finally fails.

You could also pulse the power if you suspect a bulb has blown - BMW 5 series does

This does mean that the fault could actually be at the front of the car !!

You could always do as many seem to do these days and "use the force" - they know where they are going so everyone else should do.
Particularly at fault are those with front daytime driving lights - they can see where they are going as they are designed to be noticed in strong sunlight, they might be blinding oncoming traffic at night but that's not their problem. No rear lights - don't need them to see where they are going.
