Lug nuts for mondeo steel rims that use M12 thread

Hi all,

I an hoping someone can help me out here? I brought myself a set of 16" Ford Mondeo 6.5" ET52.5 steel rims from a 2003 car, wheelfitmet.eu suggests they will fit as they have the same centre bore and PCD but face palm moment here. I have just relised the mondeo uses M12x1.5mm thread lug nuts compared to the Freelander 2's M14x1.5mm lug nuts.

I have just checked and a M14 bolt will pass through the steel wheels I have brought, the thread on the freelander measured 13.8mm using a vernier guage but I am now stumped as to what lug nuts to use with the rims?

Any ideas thanks?

Just an update on this if anyone is switching to steel wheels.

I used a set of Ford Mondeo 2003 steel wheels 16 inch 6.5j rim with Insa Turbo Dakar 2 tyres.

Lug nuts where from a 2006 Ford Galaxy which use M14x1.5 threads 21mm socket.

I need some centre caps to protect the hub nut does anyone have any advice? I measured the internal diameter as 54.7-55mm but I don't want to buy and find out they won't fit Thumbs Up

Here's the Insa's fitted

There was a forum member (Largered) who fitted steels, although he used Freelander 2 [spare] steels. Fitted with 235/65/17 INSA Dakar....

Offtopic, but I have always wondered whatever happened to Large red..... I have toyed with the idea that he changed his forum name in 2020?

Steel wheels have their benefits re offroading/crawlin'/impact/etc. but they are generally heavier/give a rougher ride/less performance/gas efficiency, etc... I prefer using a used set of aluminum alloy rims due to the ride quality, aesthetics & performance.

I hope nothing too serious a friend (after lockdown eases) it going to come along me with his disco to do some mud off roading so suggested a set of Insa's and a spare set of wheels to put them on hence the more agressive tyre Very Happy
