Hi all

I need to replace the radiator and intercooler on my 2008 TD4

I have looked at the service/workshop manual and I am ok with most of the procedure but not 100% sure of the following

1) Does the coolant need to be drained before hand, or can I get away with just a little spillage and a refill
After fitting the new radiator?

2) Do I need to do anything with the air conditioning side of things or is this not impacted?

If anyone has any tips/photos/videos of the process that would be awesome!

How old is the coolant? Unless it’s relatively fresh I would replace it anyway. Removing the radiator will drain most of the coolant, unless you drain it & collect it first.
I can’t see any reason as to why you’d disturb the AC system, I don’t think it effects the intercooler/radiator removal process.

The intercooler is accessed by removing front bumper and sits in front of air con condenser. no need to touch this to replace intercooler. I have replaced both of these.

I believe the radiator can be removed from inside engine compartment, after removing fan mechanism. not done this though.. Andy

When I replaced my intercooler and radiator I realised for the extra cost and since I had the front stripped down I might as well replace the AC condenser so I did all three.

I replaced the intercooler today.

I had noticed oil leaking more and more heavily at the intake end and the degree of fouling suggested it had been like that for some time. I had checked the hoses but concluded that it must be the intercooler itself. There have not been any performance issues or tell tale noises: the only problem has been the occasional cut out when driving.






The oil had blocked up the main radiator and had to be scraped off the surrounding area - it was so thick.

I will have to wait and see if it has done the trick. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE 2010

its onedrive link and there is alot of photos of my project.

i needed to instal new radiator, ac condenser and intercooler.
and got alot of things to do still =)

Condenser is front of whole packet and you need to take it away, so Ac will need to drain out
then i would consider of buying new O rings to ac hoses which attaches to condenser / or if you are able to wigle it out and keep hoses attached.

and what comes to coolant, just take lower hose away and try to catch most of it, and just instal new one radiator, connect hoses and fill new coolant and try to squeeze lower hose to get it " kinda " sucked in. Start engine and keep filling coolant if level drops.

if i remember correctly, there is valve under radiator. i can go check nextweek and take pictures to you

Yes, I prefer this way much better for filter change and its much easier, not so dirty and same time you can check overal condition .

Maybe the old fashion way which you guys do in uk is wrong one , and my way is correct one, even main stealers didnt know about this 😉

Here is valve which is on lower left corner of radiator.

You can empty coolant via that
