England 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Ipanema Sand
Evoque wheels advice

Just bought myself a set of Evoque wheels with Pirelli Scorpions on, 2 have just over 7mm tread and the other pair have just over 4mm tread. Am I right in thinking the 7mm tyres should go on the front?
Also when buying a set of wheels and tyres it is proper to get them rebalanced or should they be ok? Current: MY11 SD4 HSE / Sterling Quartz 2010 caravan

In the past, the best tyres should always go on the rear, which is how I run mine, on a 2WD vehicle. On a 4WD, I prefer to rotate them, simply because it gives the 4X4 system an easy time. The rear diff is made of cheese, so anything to help reduce damage to that is helpful.

If I was in your position, I'd replace the 4mm tread tyres, as under 4mm, the grip in bad conditions is compromised anyway.

Hi,
and just to give an alternative view, after all it's about tyres so 6 replies should give you 6 different answers Laughing

I would be putting the 7mm's on the front as the FL2 is mainly front wheel drive and only 4x4 when required
the 4mm's on the rear
then when the weather improves, warmer, drier, put them on the front to wear them out for next November,
to then fit a pair of new tyres then

The technical theory is that good tyres should be on the REAR because in the event of severe braking it's easier and safer to control understeer rather than oversteer where the backend is sliding about.
All tyre firms that I've been to always include balancing as it's easier and more accurate to do while the wheel and tyre are off the vehicle. And in any-case, it's so cheap why would you NOT have it done? And from past experience, whilst front wheel imbalance is pretty obvious, rear wheel imbalance is not; but when it's rectified it can transform the ride.

Put the tyres with the most tread on the front. They are doing most of the work.

The car has stability control, if you turn it off you realise it is doing quite a few things. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Am very pleased with the wheels, especially the unforeseen ride benefit. I guess it is mainly due to the track width being increased by 20mm the car feels much more stable with body roll significantly reduced.
