Expensive quote for timing belt replacement

Nearly fell of my chair when I got a quote from a local garage for £700 for the timing belt & water pump replacement. I’d be aswell trying landrover at that price.

How much should I be expecting to pay?

I have just done my own using a gates belt / waterpump kit, a gates aux belt, and new antifreeze. Parts cost just under £150 + £20 for the timing tool. Around 4-5 hours labour as a first timer on this particular car. I suspect an Indy will do the job much quicker, so labour costs will depend on hourly rate of Indy.
I assume if you are having the cam belt done, then you are looking at the 10 year service in essence. i replaced all the oils ( engine + filter, manual gearbox, power transfer unit, haldex + filter(s), and rear diff. total cost of cambelt and oils filters in the region of £300 IIRC.

Ford PSA engine, you would probably find
most reputable workshops can change it and not charge the earth.

Had mine fitted with a Gates kit last Tuesday at Westbury in Shrewsbury. £419. 20
Local LR specialist wanted £648 and that was an estimate I got a year ago. Probably more now

It has not have to be a specialist 4x4 or main dealer to fit the belt as it’s a straight forward job that any reputable garage could carry out without any problems.

I asked my LR dealer for a interim service on my 14 plate SD4 with 56k miles and an MOT on the 3+ scheme and got the following reply

Your vehicle currently is due a Timing belt change and replacement water pump due on time rather than mileage on this service –
If you were just to go for a small Interim service + MOT the total would be £326.65 (without timing belt and pump)
If you wanted these elements replaced it would be a total of £1101.54. please advise how you would like to process.

comments please? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

This is Yeovil LR, they still do the 3+ scheme for cars over 3 yrs old so service price of £275 for a main dealer is OK by me. Currently musing over whether to replace it with a petrol DS (no DPF) but with my low mileage of less than 3k miles a year on a car that's only done 56k miles seems a bit OTT to replace my FL2. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

It does make the dealer servicing on Gill & Martins MG3s look cheap - £250 each for a major service which is
oil filter, engine oil, sump washer, fuel filter, air filter, pollen filter, key batteries, brake fluid, spark plugs, coolant and ...... one years AA cover for the vehicle including home start.
When you consider that the AA cover would cost around £150 if bought separately, then it's £100 for the service

The AA cover is a bit of a joke as far as Martin is concerned, neither car has been any trouble apart from one puncture ( they have full sized spares), he is convinced I am paying for something these cars don't require.

Timing chain kit on the other hand is £258 plus £65 for the tools to do the job!! - and that's next year Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Dont new ones have a PPF now Question

You could have a run to Sunny Scotland it would clear out the DPF with such a good run, add a few miles on the car, remind you how nice they are on a long drive, spend a few days (a week) make it a road trip Laughing

although with fuel, accommodation, food, Covid testing to enter n exit (hey you never know Laughing ) it may cost you more in the long run.

but "No dont bother" would be actual reply.

Thumbs Up .

Im in a similar situation, our 2014 FL2 has done 45K miles so far and only 1500 in the last 6 months.
It probably will have done less than 50K miles when the timing belt etc is due to be changed later this year - seems wrong somehow to be changing it with so few miles under the belt so to speak Jules
