I have a LR2 TD4 (2009) with 239.000km.
A few days ago, when I was driving, the engine lost power and I got the typical REM signal. The car was immobilized, and I had to call my car assistance company to transfer the car to the LR garage. On Monday when the technicians applied the diagnostic tools they got the codes P0088-27 & P0087 (fuel rail pressure & control) as well as the P2290 (injector pressure). There was also a malfunction code relating to the alternator/generator (P063A) but that was a known problem for me, and it does not concern me at this point.
So, the technician after doing several tests along with gauging the pressure on the high-pressure injection pump suggested reluctantly to change the pump. However, because the cost of the pump is very high (1.000 Euros for me in Greece and this is not for the genuine but an OEM part), after I had done a search in the forum, I recommended to him to change the fuel filter (as it was about time and use of course a genuine part) and add some liters of oil in the tank, since I only had a quarter of fuel when the incident happened. Unfortunately, as I got informed today the problem was not solved, as the cranking still occurs but the engine does not start (no fuel is transmitted to cause ignition).
I would really appreciate any advice on what to do. Should, they need to check other things such as sensors, valves, or anything else before to proceed ordering the expensive new high-pressure pump, especially in case this is not the root of the problem?

I take it they know how to prime the fuel filter and have done so properly?

There have been problems I believe with the end of the camshaft which drives the pump breaking off. See here

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but this happened mine, high pressure pump, low pressure pump, 3 injectors and a handful of sensors later and it still aint running right, but at least is drive-able and the wife cant tell... I blame the previous owner runnign cheep fuel.

I do hope you will get away with the high pressure pump maybe even just the low pressure pump, if it does not work the high wont have a feed of fuel to work.

Thanls for the answer. You are right. I decided to change the high pressure pump with a new one and not a remake. The system also needs also a cleaning procedure which puts an additional cost. I have no choice and I hope that it will work.

look after it with decent fuel, the modern diesel engine is so highly tuned it needs top grade fuel, avoid high bio content fuel as well. long gone are the days where you could throw in your used chip pan oil..

I use BP ultimate now, if you cant get good stuff maybe a bit of 2T would help? Stewart

The thing is that I used most of the times Shell V-power diesel, but sometimes I used the cheaper one of Shell. Thanks anyway.
