Ranulph Fiennes - Discovery 5 roof platform falls off

We were watching Ranulph Fiennes's series Return To The Nile on TV. There was a scene where his Discovery 5 goes over a sand dune. The roof platform loaded with second spare wheel, spare fuel containers, sand tracks etc. The entire roof platform fully loaded flies off the front of the car denting the bonnet.

Someone must have forgot to bolt it down!

It is amazing how much stuff you see people carrying on roof racks around Perth. Makes you wonder where it will end up if they have a crash Shocked

Lightwater, heard of this before. Many years ago a friend and other LR owners did an expedition in Morocco.

There was a FL1, new, the guy got a 'well known' aluminium roof rack manufacture to take one of their roof rack and make the 1st off set of brackets to bolt it to the FL1 roof mountings.

Part way through the expedition the new 1st off brackets fractured and the whole lot came off !!

Had to stop the convoy and redistribute the racks holdings to other drivers. On wards they got to a small town where a guy who sits in a hole with a gas torch reconstructed the brackets out of junk and re-fitted the rack to the FL1. It got him home !!

The roof rack came off of my Dads Dormobile on the motorway when we were going on holiday to Swanage about 50+ years ago. Cases burst open and everything. Foolish now but all of us took turns in running out between traffic to pick up our possessions including an inflatable dinghy and a surf board. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.
