2010 FL2 TD4e Coding Towbar Electrics is it DIY?

Hi all.

I'm looking at putting a tow bar with 13 pin electrics onto our 2010 FL2 TD4e to pull our caravan.

I was planning to fit the tow bar myself as I have done them in the past and they have been OK do to, granted on older cars. I did not want to chop the loom so I was going to use the dedicated loom from PF Jones.

On the website it states coding is required for:

Required for models 06-12 / Not required for models 12-15.

I have looked at the manual for my FL2 and there is no mention of it having a trailer stability assist system. So I'm left wondering what the coding is for, is it just the tell dash lights and disabling revering sensor and fog light?

Any advice welcome.

The coding will disable the rear parking sensors as well as rear fog lights and add the tow module into the CCF; when I flashed mine I had two messages, one regarding a transmission com/fault error and the other I can't remember now. Once done adding module, the software asks to clear all error codes. I am not sure if it actually does anything to the transmission other than communicating with the reverse sensors to let the system know that a trailer is now attached.

Coding is not required if you can turn off the reverse sensors from inside the cabin. MY model year does not allow me to do this......

I used the PF Jones wiring and without coding everything worked apart from the reversing sensors. Even the trailer warning light on the dash worked. I used a cloned Mongoose cable and a free copy of SDD V130 to 'add' the trailer module and that fixed the reversing sensor problem.

It is a myth that adding the trailer module alters the auto gearbox when towing. I confirmed this in writing with Land Rover.

Thanks guys.

I've ordered the detachable tow bar and the 13 pin dedicated loom from PF Jones, I was looking at these the other day. Whilst I was there, I managed to find the installation instructions for the loom. Looks like everything will work fine. It does state that the disabling of the parking sensor and trailer indicator light monitoring needs to be enabled my LR. But also does tell you what modules need adding. So once it is up and running, I'll have a go at getting hold of the software and trying. If not, i can live with those things not working as LR intended.

Many thanks all.

You’ll find that the trailer warning light will work, but not the cut out for the reversing sensor. Here’s a picture of the cable harness installation. It really is very straightforward to do.

I had my towbar fitted on a 2011 plate Fl2 and the independent fitter failed to enable the electrics with his box of tricks.
Nothing worked as far as the electrics were concerned.
I had to take it to Land Rover - £60 lighter, all worked as it should.
My present 2013 model was plug and play.

The PF Jones cable harness works as I have described above, i.e. everything but the reversing sensor shut off.

Hi All.

Just an update from me.

I fitted the tow bar and electrics this weekend and it was a breeze for 99% it of.

The PF jones dedicated loom was a plug and play and just needed a few fuses to be added, which are part of the kit. The indicator tell tale dash light works, the fog light on the car turns off when the trailer is connected. As said above, the only thing that does not work is disabling the parking sensors, but that is easy via a button on the dash.

The only issue I had, according to the instructions, there are are two M8 captive nuts already on the chassis, which you access by drilling to holes once the reflector is removed. I found the studs OK but, there were no M8 nuts to be found. Either never fitted or have rattled loose over the years. So I've just ordered myself a couple of M8 nyloc flange nuts from ebay, which should so the same job. I'm sure these skinny M8's studs dont do much, but I want them to be there none the less.

Bracket B, was the one in question with the M8 nuts on the rear.

Thanks for all your help.

Glad you got sorted. The PF Jones cable harness is just the job, isn’t it? I also found the service from them to be really excellent when I had my queries about the S number on the towball. Highly recommended.
