Australia 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Stornoway Grey
Check engine light mystery

This ones odd. My check engine light comes on at exactly the same spot now matter how many kilometres I’ve driven in between crossing this spot. When I say spot, the light is tripped at exactly the same spot within a meter. It gIves the low turbo boost code. The spot is on a bridge that crosses over a railway that is electric with the over head power lines. The car doesn’t drive like it has low boost. I have never heard of environmental causes for a check engine light, could this happen. My Freelander is a 2010 SE TD4.

Aaahhh! Yeh, Radiated Immunity is certainly a rabbit hole. Going on that theory, it might be the turbo boost sensor being affected by some sort of radiated interference. I guess it’s either going to be a process of illumination or just avoid going over said bridge.

Don’t know any other Freelander owners here. But will check with Land Rover specialists here in Perth if they have had any similar things latley.

Motion is correct to think about the Faraday cage.

Is your front under engine skid plate fitted?

If the fault can be reproduced down to a meter as you indicated it would be interest to do the following

1. Remove the skid plate, does this increase succeptibility?

2. Slow the speed that you enter the location does this affect the susceptibility?

3. If you are really brave you could turn off your Freel2 and restart at the place that causes the interference (this won’t be possible unless the bridge has a breakdown lane to pull into)


You could also upgrade to a shielded co axel cable for the signal for the sensor

If it is from external electromagnetic radiation, you need to ensure all units have good, corrosion free, main and signal earths, and all signal lines are correctly terminated.

Although unusual, radiation problems to unintentional aerials are not unknown, and heavy electrical machinery is quite often the source. Maybe it is the fluctuations/spikes of current on railway supply cables, but if your FL2's wiring is properly connected, I would have thought it should be able to cope. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
