Mine developed a similar whine, which the dealer also traced to the power steering - but in my case it was only the idler pulley about to give up the ghost - not the pump eating itself!

most of the time this whine is the filter inside the resevoir getting blocked up. there is a black sludge that builds up in the system over time. landrover dont know where the black sludgey debis is from. they all do that! |

Sorry, there is no separate filter to change, it has to be the whole PAS fluid reservoir. |

Mine did all that and the dealer flushed the fluid. That was around 30k kms ago and it's been ok since. Mine is an 08 with 168k kms on the clock. |

If ever you hear the whine, take the car to a dealer ASAP. The more you drive the car, the more at risk is damage to the pump and rack which costs silly money to replace.
