I am new to the forum, hello everyone!

I've just bought a 2010 freelander 2 HSE TD4. I am not very mechanically inclined, but can get someone to help me with it.

I have done a clean of the engine, and drove it to try to find where the leaks are but it's very difficult to tell because it's very minor.

I've attached two photos showing the coolant leak, and the oil leak. The leak is very small, drips here and there, and never enough to see any puddles on the floor.

Oil leak:





It's under the front passenger side. (two mechanics have looked through this)

1st mechanic thinks it's an EGR being blocked, so it needs a clean, then he can block/recirculate from the turbo so no turbo leaks happen in the future. $1100AUD

2nd mechanic thinks it's a PCV problem. And advised to replace the hose (a pcv kit). $300AUD
Maybe the intercooler is blocked and needs to be cleaned (he hasn't given me a price for this).
He says the engine's pressure is too high, and that's causing oil is going to the intake manifold.

It's under the front driver's side.

2nd mechanic recommends changing the hose. $330AUD


I am thinking of getting a provent 200 or flashlube oil catcher after this, and installing it myself. Both mechanics thinks it's pointless to do so.

Does anyone have any advice and thoughts on this?

I agree with the mechanics regarding the oil catch can - waste of time.
Others will disagree but Im not convinced that collecting some condensed water and a small amount of oil in the catch can is evidence of any actual benefit to the engine. Jules

Looks like both leaks coming from EGR possibly been removed before and not fastened up sealed tight , Both my freelanders weep oil from same place not a big concern but the coolant try tightening the fastening or a new clamp maybe ..

Freelander DTC codes actually have sub codes which help with the diagnostics. But most OBD readers give you only the first 5 components.

Thanks Tiger, that makes me feel a bit better. I've used an endoscope to look further into the oil leak section to see if it might be coming from elsewhere downward. Looks like it's coming from the screw (managed to get a photo, and will attach it too). I've also tightened the screw about a quarter of a revolution, not sure if that will help it at all but I've cleaned it up and will look under the car at another time.

That's all I can do.

I don't mind a little oil leak if that's what it does, as long as it doesn't do permanent damage to the rest of the engine or other $$$ parts?

In the meantime I've managed to fit an xtron unit, and will get the car tinted tomorrow!

Its not the infamous air input oil leak joint is it ?

Is there a way to make sure that's where it's coming from?

I know last time I took it off, there was some oil in it - that's why I thought about putting a catch can.

Yes just cut some cardboard and wedge it under the pipe as a telltale.

Just an update:

1. There is no leak under the intake pipe.
2. I screwed the EGR tighter (about another half revolution)
3. I installed a catch can

So far, it doesn't look to be leaking as much as it used to. So IDK why that's the reason, but I will monitor the situation.

I bought some UV dye and put it in the engine oil and so far haven't been able to find a leak just yet.

4. I've cleared the error codes, and now I have:

P0100
Mass or volume air flow circuit

P0113
Instake Air Temperature Circuit High Input

I'm thinking it might be the air filter, and that's due to replacing (filthy). And I've ordered that. And will check the sensor when I'm changing it out.
