2009 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Galway Green
Strange noise

Hi,

I have a strange noise on my LR freelander 2 TD4SE (2009). The noise is present since few month. This week, we have replace the stearing pump but it doesn't solve my problem.
Below is a video where you can ear the specific noise. It apprra 7 second after the beginning of the video.


Do you have some ideas ?

According to your profile, you have a MY2009.
Did you changed the timing belt up until now?
A timing belt can sound like that if it's too tight. See in the below video, from 0:09 to 0:15.

Thanks for your answers. I found that your noises on the different video are different than mine.

The timing belt has been replace at 105000Km, the Freelander 2 actually have 108000Km. But I don't know if the mechanician has replace all the timing belt kit or only some parts.

Do you think that could come from the distribution?
Do you think that it could be a problem with the power steering expansion tank

The alternator pulley has a one way clutch, and has been known to seize up, although to me your noise seems different than those in the various clips.

Different in pitch but not in source, if you consider the first video... We'll see about that when you'll be solving the problem.
The fact that it appeared after only 3000 kms (1800 miles) from changing the distribution, it's not coincidence...

As the accessories belt drives both power steering and alternator, you could simply check by removing the accessories belt and see if the sound is still there.

What Alex said, remove the aux drive belt & see if the noise stops. That will at least point you in the right direction to begin with. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.
