Restricted performance

Hi, i have just started to experience 'restricted performance' on my Freelander 2 on 64 plate which has covered 48000 miles.
After a plug in the diagnosis comes up with ' EGR sensor A low voltage'. I have been advised to try a cleaner in the tank first. This I doing for the last 2 weeks. During this time am now experiencing a mixture performance and light faults. Engine management light is on permanently, with text info appearing randomly. Reduced performance seems to happy at will. Also there is a hiccup/miss when pulling off in 1st and 2nd gear. Any advise welcome. Cheers. Mark

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I think it's time to sort out the EGR. Excuse my ignorance, but do you mean by Delete the EGR?

I thought full EGR blanking off was not possible on late models as the EGr system is different to earlier ones. Am I correct?

As it happens my SD4 64 plate 44K miles has just come up with the restricted performance fault today. First fault Ive had with this car (except new battery last year). Had MOT last week - passed, no advisories.

Unfortunately Im on holiday with the FL2 and will have to drive it qbout 130 miles home before I can get my OBD reader on it. Engine and gearbox seem fine apart from the imposed performance limit. I think it should be Ok to do that as it starts fine etc. Jules

On the later cars you can blank the EGR but also need to have it deleted from the ECU.

Hi Jules. Like myself driving a diesel we don't do enough hard mileage. To be honest, my TD4 SE has not missed a beat in the 5 years I've owned it. I travel 30 miles to work. The last two days going to work no dashboard text 'RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE'. With it driving perfectly. Then on my way home today, up it pops. Time to decide what to do!! Personally, I'm not a lover of bypassing what should be there. But, who knows. Hope you manage to get home safely. Bondermark

when this happened on mine lr assist sprayed egr cleaner down air intake
pipe after air filter//engine had to be at certain temp 2007 hse gone

Its a bit weird - had "restricted performance" for a 2 hour drive on Wednesday across North Yorkshire. Today drove down the M6 and the fault has not reappeared - no faults via the OBD either.
I guess time will tell as to what was the problem.

For the last 4 years , since SWMBO retired, the FL2 only tends to be used for longer journeys (100 + miles) or for towing, so often sits on the the drive for weeks at a time. It rarely does short trips to the shops etc. So I was hoping it wouldnt suffer the effects of too many short trips despite its total mileage being low. Jules

Certain conditions must be met in order for the EGR "sanity" check to be performed.
Operating temperature is a must and then, the more throttle/load variations, the better.

Your right Alex, I sure this is the reason we are now seeing a lot of motors
showing/having restricted performance problems,
generally we are not doing enough mileage or range of revs to keep the engine healthy,

I have the EGR blanking plate with a small hole in it on my SD4, not sure how much good its doing, certainly no noticeable difference in power or economy but if its cutting down on the crap being re-ingested into the engine it cant hurt. 50+ miles a day on fast A & B roads means the DPF is not getting clogged. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

A blanking plate with a hole in it does nothing apart from restrict the flow of the spent exhaust gas re entering the engine but the end result is the same, a coked up engine Rolling Eyes
Fit a full blanking plate or dont bother.

I have decide to go for a replacement EGR valve with my local independent garage who I have used with confidence for many years. New unit fitted but failing to program the new unit. Any ideas please????

After getting some technical advise regarding the fitting of a 'Pierberg' EGR valve, it turns out the new unit is a 'plug an play'. When the new EGR valve was fitted and engine started, it would cut out with different codes than with the old unit. After some frustration and costly time, it was evident the new EGR valve was faulty. Before fitting the second new EGR, a decision was made to plug it in first. No faults. Then fitted and everything is fine. Lesson learned. Plug it in first before spending 5 hrs fitting to find it faulty. Highly unlikely, but it does happen.
