I got my 08 Freelander in december last year. Planning to keep the car a while. All looked good with 90k on the clock.

There is now a horrible noise in 5th and 6th gear (slightly in 2nd). The sound appeard overnight. From no issues to loud sound. Garage has replace gearbox oil and that the oil level was very low (about 600ml came out). This did not make any difference. And there was a shiny layer of metalic particles in the oil that did come out.

Ive been advised that it will need a new gearbox but am not sure what my best options are. There are some on ebay in the £350 range, or reconditioned seem to be £900.

Does anyone have any suggestions on best place to look at if i decide to go the reconditioned route? Or is 2nd hand from ebay the best option?

I'd check out Bell Engineering. I know they do a lot of reconditioned stuff, don't know about gearboxes, but they are basically the gold standard for reconditioned units.
