Pirelli Scorpion AT + ( All Terrain Plus ) . I’ve got those on now and I’ve had their predecessor the ATR as well . Great in mud , snow, and off the tarmac . They have the uncanny ability to drive beautifully, very very quiet and yet perform marvellously in the rough stuff . They also have an aggressive tread , very pronounced rim protector bead and a very strong sidewall . My Freelander gets used weekly in conditions that most will never put their car through .

All season SUV tyres are great , but as you need an AT tyre the likes of the Michelin Cross Climate or the Bridgestone weather control that I have on my Scooby just can’t cut it , whereas the AT+ will also give you performance in winter as they carry the European 3 peak symbol which allows them to be certified as a winter tyre in regions where they are required by legislation.

You don’t need bigger tyres , just the right one . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I would second MartynB's comment. The right tyre, not a bigger one.
I'm running Pirelli ATR at the moment, keen to go a bit more off road oriented with the tread. Like many here I went from 18 inch to 17 inch to get the right tread pattern.

I have Pirelli AT plus 255/60 R18 (they don't do a 235/60 R18) The advantages of a wider tyre is a bit more protection for the rims from kerbs. The diameter a bit closer actual speed.

Disadvantages lower torque due to larger diameter. Higher fuel consumption with wider tyre.

I wanted more sidewall for corrugated roads. Didn't necessarily want a wider tire but it has made the car feel a bit more stable.

If you haven't had AT before, they are noisier & like all tyres will get even noisier with age as the sipes get smaller.

To me Tyres are like Shoes.

each driver/wearer will have their own preference.

I have seen some really low profile tyres and one guy had a huge set of 'chunkie treads' each to their own.

edit : just found photo

I believe these were on 17" steel wheels.
