2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Santorini Black
Problems have started!

Hi all

First time i have posted here, although been registered to site for a while now. I have a Black FL2 Metropolis which i have owned for about 5 years now. Not had any issues apart from at the start when the locks were playing up, fortunately it was still under warranty at the time!

Other than that the car has been great for me and the family overall.... until the last few weeks!!

Around 3 weeks ago we were scheduled to drive down to Southampton from Birmingham to go and see the other halfs family. In the weeks leading up to this i started hearing a whirring noise which i thought was a bearing. I decided before the trip i would get it booked in and sorted just incase. As it turns out it was the transfer box that needed replacing, a nice £1000 bill to have it fixed....

Picked the car up a couple of days before the journey and was back to normal again.. Happy days, or so i thought !

On the Saturday we were just coming out the end of the road to start our journey, as i pulled out i heard a loud bang!!! I immediately pulled over and checked to see if i could see anything in road or under the car etc. Nothing ! I was miffed by this but decided to carry on and see how the car was for a little bit and just hope it was a stone or something. In my head i knew it was the car but decide to drive down as the car was driving ok etc! We got to within around 20 miles of Southampton and hit a little traffic on the M3. As i pulled off again the car started jerking and making and almost grinding sound from what i remember, i drove the car cautiously the rest of the way trying to listen to any noises or sounds that were unusual.

I rang my mechanic and tried to explain it to him what happened, he wasnt sure what it was and said could be a number of things without seeing it. I arranged to get it back to him on the Monday morning to be checked out. When we left Southampton on the Sunday, as i pulled off gently the back wheels felt as if they had dragged almost. It sounded like i had floored it out of there!!!! Got it home ok with no issues in driving it back although i went out a couple of times in it once we were back and it was doing the wheel drag on occasions but not all the time and only on pull off from stand still.

Mechanic checked it out Monday and said its one of two things, either the filter and oil needs changing in the rear diff or something called the Helix/Helex? which would cost me another £1000 to sort out. I asked him to try changing the Rear diff filter and oil first to see if it was that. The car hasn't been dragging the wheels but now i seem to have a real loud rattling noise on startup, which is starting to concern me.

It doesn't seem to be affecting the drive of the car or anything but im just worried there is another repair bill coming, which at the moment i really cant afford!! I believe there was a little rattle on startup since i have had it and was always the same... now it seems like it has amplified x 10 !

Sorry for the long winded post, i just wanted to give the full picture!! Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

For Haldex

Recent one title of Haldex repair at Bell could be what your talking about

Read some others and you may get ideas of price as well

oil and filter change is for the Haldex unit

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

Hi Riverblanche

Thank you for your reply!! Yes thats what i meant the Haldex Very Happy

See it doesn't seem to have those symptoms of the Hadex unit anymore, or shall i say it hasnt happened to me since the filter and oil were changed! I will monitor this of course as ive only had the car back just over a week, most of that not driven as ive been working away for a few of those days.

Its the loud rattling on start up which is concerning me now, its really loud!

Just took it out for a 20 minute drive to see if its still doing it...... Looks like im going to need the Haldex doing Censored

I tried taking as many turns from standstill as i could, tried at various speeds also. It didn't do it all the time, but did when i put my foot down a little more aggressively.

Couple of questions:

Would the traction light on the dash come on if it was the Haldex is playing up? Im guessing it would, but i cant say for sure i noticed it before when it was doing it !

Will the car be ok to drive like this until i get the money together to have it done? Should only take me a month or so to get the money together.

I'd have thought it's a very bad idea to drive the car at all if things are making all those noises etc. I'd imagine it's not doing the drivetrain any good.

But as others have said, Bell Engineering are your friends. If you can't get to them, find a local indy who uses their parts. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

Thanks for the reply Chuckalicious

Fortunately Bell Engineering are only 45 mins away from me and i also noticed on their website that they do a free diagnostics of this. Ive just emailed them to see when i can get it down to them to have a look and sorted if it is the case Sad

Im worried now as i need the car for work etc and have no access to another vehicle currently. Also came at the worst time for me financially!! Always the way.......

Land Rovers have a sensor that detects when the worst possible time is to develop a fault. Ironically it's the only sensor that doesn't go wrong...

@Metropolis Leigh
Hi
How many miles has it done ?

I'm guessing you've not had the autobox and haldex fluids changed already.

JLR say "sealed for life" to keep routine servicing cost down but that just is a con really IMO and just means these components will have a shorter lifespan than if you had them serviced (like we used to do).

Other car manufacturers that use Haldex units stipulate to change haldex oil & filters between 20 and 40K miles depending upon the vehicle.

PS As many others have said Bell Engineering is the place to go. Jules

Hi Jules

Its done 46k

I have had the Haldex fluid and filter changed just over a week ago. Im not sure about the autobox in all honesty!

Yeah my mechanic said he hadnt even come across it before and that the JLR service list doesnt mention it either!! I had the transfer box done originally then the Haldex fluid and filter... now looking very likely the the unit needs reconditioned or replaced..... I have emailed Bell to see when i can pop down for them to have a look.

Just not my luck at the moment, had such a rough 2 months for various reasons... now this! Ahhh well i guess you have to keep smiling somehow!

Just got to find the money from somewhere with barely any work on at the minute Sad

After I had changed my own Haldex oil and filter on my Evoque, I also had a rattling noise on startup. Turned out to just be one of the heat shields touching the exhaust. I had to drop the exhaust when doing the job on my Evoque and it must have been dislodged then. Could yours just be something as simple? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
