Freelander 2 TD4 2.2 won’t start

Hi everyone:
I was driving my FL2 (2010) on the motorway, the fuel level was showing about a quarter of the tank left, all of sudden I lost power and managed to pull over before it completely stopped. The engine cranks but fails to start. I recovered home , run a test and came up with P0087 & P0088 codes ( Fuel rail/ system pressure-too low), removed the fuel feed pipe from the filter and that was bone dry. I am more inclined about replacing the High Pressure fuel pump as it is the one responsible for sucking the fuel pump all the way from the tank. However some other people suggest the in-tank pump could be the culprit.
Any advice on how to determine the faulty pump will be much appreciated. Thank you

The in tank pump has nothing to do with the fuel injection system, other than to keep the fuel pick up point supplied with fuel at all times. There are several other threads running with this similar problem at the moment. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Not quite...

The high pressure pump boosts the fuel pressure received from the tank.

If the low pressure fuel is not reaching the input to high pressure pump, it will never work.

If you read any of the many threads on changing the fuel filter they will all tell you the same thing. That there is no fuel lift pump in the tank supplying fuel to the filter. The pump in the tank only moves fuel from one side of the saddle tank to the other with no pressure supplied to the fuel line to the engine at all.

I ordered a primer hand pump from eBay , while awaiting for it to arrive I filled the tank to 1/2 of its capacity and changed the filter . When the hand pump arrives I will try to prime the fuel system as per land rover instructions and check the fuel pressure at the rail, if everything goes well it should hopefully start otherways I will have to test the HP pump.

Topped up the fuel , Used the hand pump after the filter to pump diesel from the tank; cranked the car a few times ; loosed the injectors pipes one by one to bleed any air left in the system and boom it fired up.
Further investigation showed that the in-tank pump is faulty and failing to pump diesel from one side of the tank to the other . The gauge showed there is a fuel but HP pump couldn’t pump any from the driver side of the tank when most of the diesel is still sitting in the passenger side of the tank.
A replacement pump was fitted and everything is now working as it should.
