Coolant Issues

My 2012 6 cylinder petrol Freelander had some issues last year with low coolant. Later my service guy, who knows Land Rover stuff really well, did a pressure test and discovered a broken seal in a component (photo below). This was replaced. My vehicle is very low kms for its age (50 thousand Kilometers). Its been good for the past year but now getting the low coolant warning popping up.

I checked earlier posts going back to 2010 on here about coolant issues. Cold was one reason given for low coolant signal and vehicle parked on a slope was another. Neither applies to my situation in Perth Western Australia, where our winters are pretty mild.

Have just topped up with coolant and will see what happens in a week or so. My question is this. Do Freelanders use a more than normal amount of coolant or does anyone have any similar experiences to me? Any advice appreciated.

That's the Thermostat housing and the orange gasket holds the coolant in and its broken.

There are a few known leaking points for the 6 cylinder Freel2

If it were my Freel2 I would replace the following

LR001442

LR001505

LR019341

More information can be found here

If after replacing these you still are having problems then the Reservoir may have a crack or another pipe may be leaking.

Note: I live in California and its warm here and I don't have to add coolant ever

Good luck

Paul

The failure on you Thermostat housing is not typical

It does look like the plastic failed in a thin section

The arrow in the picture below points to the point of failure

Gary,

The coolant parts I recommend are a small hose and O ring that are just left of the Thermostat.

Anyone who can replace the Thermostat can remove this hose and replace it.

The other part number is the rigid bleed hose that connects the cylinder head to the reservoir.

If the engine is cold then this can be replaced in about 5 minutes.

If you are interested in learning what should be maintained and what is likely to break then take a look at this thread

Good luck
