Could be the belt idler (tensioner?) pulley. Mine died early on. Bearing was failing, any extra load stopped the slop. Eventually seized, stopping the belt = no power steering for 30 miles 😳 Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

That was my original thought. If it want for the turning affecting it that would have been 1st check. I will check anyway incase. Thanks |

Any progress on this? I have the exact same fault. Despite extensive searching I have not come across anyone else reporting the exact same symptoms. It is like a hissing noise when you are giving NO steering input through the steering wheel. It occurs at all steering positions, speeds and revs. Apply any pressure to the steering wheel and the noise disappears. Initially I changed the power steering fluid (CHF) and the fault was cured for a couple of hundred miles then it came back changing it again does not help. I read on a non Land Rover specific forum that it might be a bypass valve in the power steering pump sticking or maybe hissing due to passing fluid which has air in it / foamy fluid? Mine was bubbly / foamy in the reservoir at one point but not since the fluid changes. (I've done several but only managed to partially drain the system at each change). I also read that some oil on the drive belt might (counter intuitively) make the belt grippier so to spray WD40 on it. That made absolutely no difference. I have ordered a new reservoir and will flush again. If that doesn't help it's throw parts at it time I guess, starting with the pump. |

I have now installed a refurbished rack and a reservoir. Mechanic then noticed the feed pipe very hot so we installed a new pump and still no difference - still have hydraulic noise and very hot feed pipe). Could I have an issue with a blocked pipe and if so which one is most likely? |

Very interesting! I am shocked that a new rack has not fixed the problem!

When ours was about 18 months old the idler pulley that tensions the belt for the power steering seized and the vehicle was recovered to Stockport LR.

For too many years I worked on Forklifts for a living where hydraulics both abound and can be well and truly hidden.

Well, after £500+ of parts + Labour changing the pressure pipes has resolved the issue.
