Has anyone else experienced this since this thread started or found a resolution? I have a 2013 freelander manual TD4. At around 1800 revs I get a throttle hesitation, almost like a hiccup. It doesn't happen every time and seems to occur more when the engine is warm. LR have had it in three times. Firstly thinking it was the DPF, then a butterfly valve sticking (which was replaced) and thirdly a software upgrade (apparently this problem has been seen in hot countries and LR have produced a software fix). Sadly no joy.

It doesn't fill me with much confidence when driving and is downright annoying when towing. An easy solution is to always give beans and don't bring the clutch up until the car is over 2000 revs, but that can't be right.

I am not complaining about LR, but if others have found solutions, it would help if I can pass something on to them to try to resolve the problem. I came to LR because of their success as tow vehicles. At the moment, my confidence is reducing...

Could it be this? http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic16502.html

Mines now doing it again after the EGR 'fix', need to get it booked in again.

help

we have a freelander 2 2011, from a standing start if you set off slowly and light throttle about 15 to 200 rpm the car blips very quickly about 2 times followed by what sounds like turbo over boost pressure, which goes down in noise level about 3 different stages ???

any ideas

I have a similar problem. See my post.
It would appear the turbo is gradually failing. Having a turbo specialist look at it on Monday.
Problem with mine was between 2000 & 3000 rpm.
Looks like it needs a new turbo, if it fails it could kill the engine completely.
Car has only done 46500 miles. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

I've got this exact problem (2000rpm hesitation and 'whoosh' sound when still under load). Had this problem a while, but noticed the whoosh sound for the first time when I turned off the radio. I've got an auto SD4, but get the same issue when put it in manual mode 1st 2nd or 3rd gear. I agree it does seem like it happens when it's thinking of changing gear but manual mode eliminates the gearbox suggestion.

Did you fix the problem?

I've found lots of suggestions on the internet but no-one has said 'Yes - doing xxx has fixed it!'. People have suggested turbo actuator, MAF sensor, intercooler hose, throttle body, EGR, oxygen sensor, throttle pedal and turbo solenoid. Surely, it must be only one of these parts that needs replacing.

Thanks. Smile

Have to looked at your error codes?

Was the intercooler hoses for me, lower hose where i couldn't see the split. Tight access, but very doable to whip the hoses (upper short and lower long) and throttle body off to have proper look at them for just the cost of your time and some scraped knuckles.

Few quid to get a EGR blank (even if you remove it later).

Lube your turbo linkage.

Clean your MAF (or replace, one could argue they're all old enough to warrent a replacement by now).

All of those are very low cost, and might narrow the field down before you start on the expensive stuff.

Thanks for the feedback. I've done over 10,000 miles in the last 18 months and am on the 2nd turbo. In both cases, there was no problem to start with, then it appeared occasionally, then got more frequent until it now happens all the time. This is a bit confusing because I wouldn't expect the problem to go away then gradually return again after I changed the turbo.

Anyway, I will follow your advice and start checking/replacing the cheaper items (hoses, MAF etc.). I will also check some live data on my Foxwell - have already checked air flow and air pressure and they seem ok.

Thanks.

I've been trying to check the intercooler hoses for splits and have noticed a split, but it's on the other side of the jubilee clip.

For those that are looking at this thread should know what/where this hose is, so I won't explain its location.

Also, there is a slight oil residue at the back of plastic pipe that is under the short rubber hose that is near the oil dipstick. I've cleaned it off and will check in a few days to see if there is any more oil deposited here.

This shouldn't be a cause for concern, should it?

Oil from the short hose attaching to the throttle body? Could be losing pressure on loose connection (or a split). I'd pulling them off and checking those as well, was a bumper off job for me to get to the lower one... Or have to checked those already?

Thanks for the advice. I'll book it in with the mechanic to get it all the hoses looked at (I haven't got room to take the bumper off at home).

For info, I disconnected the MAF meter and the 'whoosh' stopped. However, I'm guessing this is because it runs in reduced performance so probably doesn't make enough boost pressure to make a 'whoosh'. These sensors vary greatly in price, so I'll get a cheap-ass one first just to see if it behaves differently with a new MAF.

Another (diesel) forum mentioned EGR cooler. The list of candidates is growing all the time... Smile

Fitted the new MAF sensor - made no difference - still got the problem.

If it's a leaking air hose, then why, if you accelerate hard, can you bypass the problem?

Next, I need to learn more about how the EGR works. I used to get 38-39mpg, but I can't get past 32mpg nowadays (even at steady 70mph).

Anyway, it's booked in with the mechanic on the 30th (2 weeks away).

Hoping it's as easy as the hoses... I could never figure out why my split caused such variable issues - some times it would be fine, sometimes terrible. Surely it should be leaking or not leaking.

You're not getting any judder feel during the hesitation are you?

I was game for taking my egr out and cleaning it, but went blanking instead.

No judder. Another symptom is that it's a bit snatchy when going off and on with with the throttle at lower revs - it's not as smooth as it usually is.

When it all works it's sublime - at the moment, it's horrible.

I'll keep trying to get to the bottom of it. At least I'll learn more about how it all works.

Thanks.
