So it seems that Landrover NZ has the rights for BOT 118/95 PLUS sown up, and I'm refusing to sell a kidney to pay for 1L of that, so I went with a brand i trust, Penrite Gear Oil, 75W-90, lists Transfer Cases and Diffs for usage, GL-5 spec.

Have just realised that the Castrol BOT188 is Synthetic. I've used a Semi-Synthetic.

I'm thinking this isn't a big deal, I'll just put some Penrite fully synth in next time (maybe reduce the time frame down before the next fluid change to be safe).

Unless anyone out there wants to raise some red flags?

The fact that you've actually changed the PTU oil is one up on JLR. They recommend you do nothing until the PTU dies then buy another PTU (so called "sealed for life").

I used a fully synthetic when i did mine at 35K miles. When you decide to change yours will depend upon mileage and the work the car does. But I dont think anything will go wrong before you drain and refill with a FS oil if you're sensible.

Once you got the level nailed I would not sweat it; the oil you put in is fine but should be changed at a shorter interval.

As a side note, most synthetic oils also contain cleaning (& conditioning) agents. I have only experienced one negative experience using synthetic in a outboard lower unit; it caused a minor "seep" leak in the internal water pump (cooling system) causing the oil and water to mix in the lower. As soon as I changed back to the manufacturer's brand, no more water intrusion. So, just change the semi sooner and all will be good IMO.

Thanks guys, I wasn't getting worried, but there was that niggle in the back of my head. Cheers for putting that to rest.

NZ switched to KM back in the mid 70's, so talking about 'milage' on a car is still pretty common, even though it's not miles. "How many K's has she done?" is the norm. Wouldn't be surprised if 'kilometerage' started to make an appearance at some point though (insert shudder emoji here).

KM's wasn't a big change for me, but using km/L instead of MPG is still difficult!

It should be Liters / 100 KM

The interesting thing about Liters / 100 Km is that you can easily calculate the fuel cost difference

Old car is 10 L / 100 KM

New Car is 5 L / 100 KM

Cost per year is 1/2


For MPG

Old Car is 30 MPG

New Car is 40 MPG

30 - 40 = 10

10 / 30 = .333333 (33.3%)

So my improvement is 33.3%

Old car = 400 gallons

New car = 300 gallons

Savings = 100 / 400 = 25%



I realize its the same argument if you go to the store and an item is 50% off with an additional 50% off, the item isn't free.

Dividing 282.5 by L/100km = mpg.

Dividing 282.5 by MPG = L/100km Jules
