HI every one,
I wonder if any one could help me. My wife was driving the car yesterday and it suddenly died. She had to drive it to the the side of the freeway and leave it there. We towed it back to our home and I have been going through it. When I try to start it the engine turns over without any issues. I have changed the diesel filter and bled the system. But it won't start. I think it may be the fuel sender. But there are no fault codes, though it is saying reduced engine performance.

The first thing to get done is to have any fault codes read. That will hopefully point you in the right direction at least. There are several members in Sydney, so I’m sure one of them will have diagnostic kit, if you don’t. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

My mistake, ok then, no fault codes could mean any number of things. The crank position sensor can fail & not give a fault code. Does the tacho move when you try to start it, if it does move then that is possibly not your problem but still worth pulling it off, cleaning it & checking the wiring. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. I forgot to mention that I have already cleaned the crank sensor. The revs do move up and down, no problems.

Yes, this sensor is a font of problems and
it is positioned in a place where it gets dirty easily ...
many times it is enough to clean it, sometimes is its electrical contacts, sometimes it has to be replaced!
Fortunately it is a simple job.

I have checked the car for DTCs. I was not able to find any at first, but now I found three numbers: P2290, P0087 and P0088
That's all. I would appreciate if any one can give me some guidelines on what is happening. Thank you.

As you probably know, those all relate to fuel pressure, so I'd suggest you start there.

Are there any sub codes or are you only getting 4 digit codes? (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

If it died suddenly and is pre MY2009, then exhaust camshaft could be broken at the connection with the high pressure fuel pump.... Worth checking.

No, the failure is in the end of the exhaust camshaft that engages the HP fuel pump. So the camshaft is still correctly timed to the crankshaft. The only way to check is to remove the HP fuels pump. There isa complete string on the forum to review.

I cannot see any other codes, they are the only ones I got. I cleared them, disconnected the battery for about 20 minutes, tried to start it but it will not fire. The engine turns OK but it will not fire. I will change the crankshaft sensor today and see what happens. Could this be related to then transfer pump in the fuel tank?

You could try an alternative fuel supply such as brake cleaner to see if it at least tries to start before you start stripping things, just a thought. Understeer when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower how fast you hit the wall.
Torque how far you take the wall with you.
