The first thing to get done is to have any fault codes read. That will hopefully point you in the right direction at least. There are several members in Sydney, so I’m sure one of them will have diagnostic kit, if you don’t. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

My mistake, ok then, no fault codes could mean any number of things. The crank position sensor can fail & not give a fault code. Does the tacho move when you try to start it, if it does move then that is possibly not your problem but still worth pulling it off, cleaning it & checking the wiring. I have checked the car for DTCs. I was not able to find any at first, but now I found three numbers: P2290, P0087 and P0088

As you probably know, those all relate to fuel pressure, so I'd suggest you start there.

If it died suddenly and is pre MY2009, then exhaust camshaft could be broken at the connection with the high pressure fuel pump.... Worth checking. |

I cannot see any other codes, they are the only ones I got. I cleared them, disconnected the battery for about 20 minutes, tried to start it but it will not fire. The engine turns OK but it will not fire. I will change the crankshaft sensor today and see what happens. Could this be related to then transfer pump in the fuel tank? |

How do I check that? Will I have to take the valve cover to inspect it? If the camshaft has broken, would not that cause the engine to cease as the valves would crash with the pistons? |

No, the failure is in the end of the exhaust camshaft that engages the HP fuel pump. So the camshaft is still correctly timed to the crankshaft. The only way to check is to remove the HP fuels pump. There isa complete string on the forum to review. |

You could try an alternative fuel supply such as brake cleaner to see if it at least tries to start before you start stripping things, just a thought. Understeer when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
