4 bikes and a dog on a freelander 2

I am after trying to fit 4 bikes and a Dog in a freelander 2.

I have a dog crate for the back of the FL2 but need advice on bike racks.

I like the idea of the tailgate mounted racks but am not sure if you can open the boot with them on( to let the dog out on long journeys)?

If this is not possible I am guessing that 4 on the already fitted LR roofbars is a possibility but do 4 bikes fit across. Any recommendations etc.?

I do not have a tow ball and had not planned on getting one fitted.

If it helps 2 of the bikes are not that big as they are for a 7 and 9 year old.

Any advice?

Cheers Rob I must be addicted:

I use a 'Normal' bike rack mounted on the tailgate and you can open the tailgate with bikes on however this puts allot of pressure on the rear window. I have opened it with bikes on the back if im just grabbing something from the boot area, i would recommend taking the bikes off if you need into the boot, or putting the small bikes on the back.

I have seen roof mounted racks with upto 4 bikes on them but not sure in the land rover one does that or not.

according to the instructional dvd which comes with the freelander2, even if you take your bike with you the land rover is more fun so there's no need for the bike!

I have a Thule EuroWay 945 for two bikes which is attached to the tow bar but has a mechanism which allows the bikes to swing away from the boot to allow access which works very well. It is also available as a three bike version (947), but not sure if Thule make a similar type for 4-bikes. There are however other types that will take 4-bikes, but you will have to loosen the whole attachment on the tow bar ball to give boot access.
Maybe this link will be of use Question
