Just a problem I had that I couldn't really find any information on.

So I did my 2nd oil and filter change since owning the car. What a place for an oil filter.

Anyway, afterwards I was getting the oil light on my dash while at idle or at traffic lights. Obviously this worried me.

I though that maybe I'd put the wrong amount in or something etc etc but eventually found out that all I'd done wrong was not quite tighten the filer enough.


Must have been a slight air leak in the filter at idle and dipped the pressure below threshold and triggered the light but then when the car sped up the pressure popped back into threshold and turned it off.

Need to invest in a 27mm ratcheting spanner or bend one up maybe..

Yes I have to agree with you what a place to position an oil filter, makes you think then how many don’t get changed during a service

Hi I use a 27mm ratchet spanner with a flexible head, there are plenty on eBay or in tool stores. It then only takes a minute or so to change the filter.

Agree with AJ  Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

in the oil filter housing there is a non return valve.
Without extreme care these can become dislodged, or even just wiping around with a rag can disturb the valve.
Do not drive without checking if the light has been on during tickover.

This is a known issue with freelander2

equipment and in the aftermarket have an integrated,
spring-loaded oil return valve. Unscrewing the filter
insert releases the valve allowing the oil in the
housing to fl ow into the oil sump. This ensures that
the complete volume of oil can be drained during the
oil change.
The purpose of the valve is to open the oil return
channel when the filter is removed, and to close this
channel when the filter is fitted. However, experience
shows that the sealing ring in the valve can become
brittle—with the result that the valve jams and is unable
to properly seal the oil pressure channel or the oil return
channel, thereby preventing the build-up of adequate oil

I relieve its a new housing, having said that i have seem them just dislodged before if someone has wiped around with a rag Jaguar x-type sport gone
