Never heard that before Lightwater. Why does silicon cause rust? The material itself or sloppy application?

You need to use a non acidic silicone. Most of the silicone at the hardware store are not suitable. When you remove the M10 bolt there is unpainted metal which should be painted first. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
