Engine vibration on start up

Hi. First post so thanks for letting me join. Twice in the past month, my diesel Freelander 2 has run very roughly immediately on start up. I stopped it instantly and re-started it and it ran sweetly as it does all the time. Its done 64000 miles and has never given any problems at all. It had its B service at a LR dealer 2 months/2000 miles ago and passed with flying colours. Any ideas on why it might start up as if it's trying to throw the engine out of the bay? Thank you

Could be a sticking throttle body, in the inlet is a butterfly valve, when you stop the engine this flap closes and shuts off the air supply meaning that the engine shuts down smartly, rather than the couple of extra lumpy revolutions of older cars. This butterfly valve is supposed to be open when the car starts / runs, if it is failing (and they do) then it might have closed when you switched off, but only partially opened when you next started = lumpy running and will not rev properly. Turning off and on again gives the valve another chance to open properly. This can continue for months before it finally dies.

Could be air in the fuel lines, left standing for a while causes misfire at stratup, but stopping and re-stating has given the system time to purge the air. look around fuel filter for signs of damp.

Just a guess but could it be a glow plug? they are used at startup and for a short while after until the engine warms up.

There of course will be many other options, but good places to start. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

You need to see if there are any fault codes.

Possible cause is glow plug module or glow plug fault.

If the car is post MY2010, meaning EDC17 ECU, it can do that because of a glitch in the firmware. IIRC, bad identification of cylinder order...

Thanks Andy. The throttle body issue sounds very relevant. It went to a dealer today for MOT. They think there’s a rattle from the high pressure fuel pump that needs investigation. I’ll raise the throttle issue. Best get it all looked at. Cheers.

I had this on my 2011 model it would happen perhaps twice a year. You start the engine and the whole car rattles and vibrates, you stop and start again and all OK. It's never happened on my 2014 SD4. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I had something similar when I started mine after it had stood idle for a couple of months. It was fine after that. I suspected air in the injection circuit but as it didn't recur decided to forget it. Ian.
