Has anyone else installed the factory fire extinguisher kit LR002523?

With more of my car adventures being involved with motor sport, and motor miss adventure, I felt it was becoming time to get a fire extinguisher installed in the Freelander.

That extinguisher looks like it would struggle putting a fag end out.

I would like one in the front but a 1kg extinguisher is too large. So mounted one on the left & a second one on the right in the boot. I bought a 2.3kg but it is a bit too large with all the other stuff in the car.

Give the extinguisher a bash once a month to free up settling powder. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Fitted mine in the boot, hadn't thought of upsetting the passenger,
Looks like it could be made to fit further back so i'm going to put that on the list of things to do.  Common sense isn't very common.

My low tech solution - I have 2 1kg extinguishers tucked into the right hand boot cubby hole.



The reason I have 2 smaller ones is from experience I gained when putting out a car fire in 2007.

In 2007 a large car boot sale which we attended regularly was plagued by a series of suspicious car fires on a regular basis.
Below is a link to one which had tragic consequences which occurred a couple of weeks before my story.

It happened one Saturday, I was parked up and reading my newspaper (my wife was looking around the sale), when I heard some shouts behind me. When I looked in my mirrors I could see black smoke a few rows behind me. I then could see that the smoke was bellowing out from beneath a car. From my boot I grabbed my fire extinguisher and ran across and by ducking down on the windward side of the car I could see that the fire was seated in a container under the car. Luckily my extinguisher worked and I was able to smother the fire.

A car park attendant had by then appeared and we pushed the container clear of the car.

The 'fire setting' device consisted of a shallow plastic box containing several small water bottles which contained petrol.
An oily rag or something similar provided the initial combustion, although this and the plastic box were badly damaged and hard to see how it had been originally set.

Surprisingly the car did not appear to be that badly damaged, so I returned back to read my papers.

When I replaced my extinguisher (out of my own pocket) I decided against another 2kg one, and opted for 2 x 1kg, as I felt that if the fire had reignited, I would have liked something better than an empty single extinguisher.
