Luckily I'm retired but I have guilty of going to work sick & it was expected that you went to work! Governments are going to have to enact legislation for sick leave across all employment arrangements so other people are safe & you don't get fired just incase you maybe sick with Coronavirus.

While we might align ourselves with the Australian concept of chucking a sickie, in a pre-COVID world many of us have admitted to going to work while sick.

But the coronavirus pandemic has upended many of our regular practices, and our Chief Health Officer Brendan Murphy wants us to drop our "soldier on" mindset around work — permanently.

As the report says, millions are falling through the safety net, so a sniffle and you lose your income and if it's a small employer or you're a contractor you're income and job. No money and you are out on your ear.

I see the opposite end of the scale, an employee who had a heart attack, spent 12 months off sick on full pay, came back for "light duties" for a month then retired early. Or new mothers who spend 6 months off on full pay, 6 months on half pay, back in for a few weeks and then decide that they want to be stay at home mothers. Employees who "haven't had their quota of sickies this year". Surgery = 12 weeks off sick, for an office worker!

By all means if you have a cough or a sniffle, wear a face covering to protect your colleges, but don't stay at home and expect the same colleges to carry you and be thankful that you are at home watching daytime TV Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Society should be asking the question, "Why are people starting to gather together to be "at work" when working from home has been made to function and has so many benefits". I think the energy and resources that are being applied to the back to work effort should instead be used to improve the already established work from home. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

My neighbour is a teacher and said that there is a variation on this theme where you time your pregnancy to coincide with the end of the long summer holiday. It plays havoc with school budgets as they have to get supply teachers in . She told me of someone who had a couple of kids and played the system for a couple of years.

As for sickies quotas I once had a government agency as a client where people booked sick leave in advance ! Apparently the Union had negotiated it.  3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

We have a system in place at work whereby you're called in and your attendance reviewed after three periods of absence - three single days, three periods of two months, all treated the same.
As soon as it was announced that any Coronavirus absence would be disregarded, everyone generated a mental list of the people who would be 'going sick with symptoms' and yes within a few days, those on those lists all booked off.
"Sod the rest of you" I'm having a few weeks away, fully paid.

Our supermarket. An overflow section! The toilet paper aisle is stocked floor to ceiling now that everyone has 500 rolls at home!

Plenty of rice & other things on the selves. The only sleeves that are empty are the noodle shelves as a lot of noodles come from China. Probably a lot of workers in factories have vanished for one reason or another! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Car Showrooms to reopen in June -

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has published guidance for how businesses can safely resume work during the coronavirus outbreak.
