I have just completed the replacement of the timing belt along with removing the swirl flaps and egr delete . I had earlier( 18 months ago ) obtained an estimate from a dealer of $3000 minimum ,after thanking them and hanging up , after a fair bit of aussie vernacular describing thieves, crooks and various other snake oil salesmen I decided to do it my self . Picked up the timing location tools on ebay and the oem parts from the UK including water pump and a filter kit for about $200 or $300 ( cant remember the exact amount) . A fairly easy job in the end for anybody with mechanical ability ,plenty of information on the net . the most important thing is to lock the engine and cam as the drive sprocket on the crankshaft floats through several degrees once the accessory drive pulley is removed . that is why you have to turn the engine over 10 times so that the belt is at the correct tension after it has settled into its correct position on the sprockets and with the timing rechecked the drive sprocket can then be locked into position .

The belt ,water pump and idlers were in good condition ,I think that the recommended replacement is 250k but I wanted to check the swirl flaps and do the whole lot at once . I am sure that the belt would go the recommended ks but the idea is not to let the belt go until it fails . Also 200k is a nice round number to give the vehicle a major service I will be replacing the brake rotors and pads very soon as they are on the limit and the front pads have never been changed . 09 freelander
