I lined my walls with exterior grade ply before tiling, this was mainly due to the surface being very bumpy so I had to have a level finish to set the tiles onto. It was for a power shower and had to be right, hasn't leaked yet after 3 1/2 years

You might find it easier to strip the plasterboard skin off the wall and put a freash skin on

I'm in the building trade if its really bad you will need to filled the large holes with carlite bonding then re-skim the walls with carlite multi finish then once dry the walls will need PVA glue on them to seal the surface or the new tile wont stick and they will fall off.
