Help please: odd problem with tailgate lock

Hello all,
New member hoping you can help with a strange problem with tailgate locking on 2009 TD4 HSE.
When unlocking vehicle using the remote it all works normally except the tailgate remains locked. But using the tailgate only button on the remote does unlock it, and pressing the usual lock button does lock everything including the tailgate.
I'm aware that a locked tailgate is a common problem with FL2s, but I believe that in those cases the remote won't unlock it.
A RR owner has suggested it could just be that the battery is getting weak, so I'll get it discharge tested asap - but can any kind persons offer other explanations just in case the battery isn't the problem?
Many thanks!

Pretty much sure it’s the micro switch in the handle yours is exactly same as mine,I bought a switch from a member here just trying to find time to put it on.

Hi SYFL2,
Many thanks for your suggestion.
Can now confirm that the battery is fine, so you could well be correct. The part is pretty cheap, so it is certainly worth a try before getting the local garage involved.
Cheers!

Your vehicle should come with two key fobs. Try the other one before deciding .......

Hi Largered,
Yes, I tried that first. Unfortunately the same result with both keyfobs - will unlock if I press tailgate but not if I just use the central unlock. Seems weird to me that the tailgate fob button will unlock it if it is problems with fuses, wiring, microswitches etc. but what do I know? I'm just hoping it is not the central control unit, which I gather is expensive Crying or Very sad
Cheers!

Hi Dartman the one,
Yes - it was working with the double press until a few days ago but now only responds to the tailgate button.
Thanks for the suggestion, though.

This is a common fault. It will be the microswitch in the tailgate handle.

If it responds to the tailgate button on both key fobs it would be reasonable to suspect a software glitch, have you tried the hard reset, disconnect the battery and short the +ve terminal to earth or -ve lead, having done that you will need to reset the windows and possibly the sun roof, forget about the 20 or 30 minutes wait, capacitors discharge in seconds when grounded and capacitors are the basis of temporary storage of data. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Hello The Helper, and thanks for your suggestion. But I spoke to a local 4x4 mechanic this morning and he disagrees. Apparently, if the microswitch fails the tailgate will not unlock using the tailgate button on the keyfobs - and it does. He's never come across this particular problem before.
Thanks

Good morning,
The 4x4 mechanic I spoke to this morning agrees that it could be a software problem Sad
Or the CCU has developed a fault Crying or Very sad
But he's never come across this particular issue before so it could take some time (= money) to sort.
When I get time (we're expecting a new grandchild due yesterday and so are on-call for babysitting duties while they dash to the hospital) I'll ask him to follow your suggestion and just try a hard reset.
Grateful for your helpful suggestion.
Cheers!

You need to find a better mechanic. They might be good with spanners, but Auto Electricians they ain't!

If the microswitch in the handle fails, then the boot will only unlock from the keyfob boot button. The latching mechanism is a separate circuit to the bootswitch, albeit interconnected via the harness.

Change your bootswitch. It's a half hour job and will cost less than £20 in parts.

^^^I agree with Sperly, it's the microswitch.

Hello Robm, Motion Inc, Sperly and all,
Big thank you for the vote on microswitch Smile
So much for main dealers, eh?
I'll order one today and hope to report back with success next week.
Again, many thanks to all for your help - much appreciated!
