I'm looking to charge up my battery but to do so I have to disconnect it from the car and charge it upstairs in my Tower Block Flat. It looks rather complicated, is there a correct way to disengage it and what could be the consequences in doing so. If someone could point me to the correct way to do it I would be very grateful.

From the handbook:

Removing the vehicle battery

1. Ensure that all electrical circuits are
switched off, all windows are closed, and
the alarm is disarmed.
2. Remove the remote control from the
vehicle and wait two minutes to allow the
systems to power down fully.
3. Undo the negative clamp, and lift the cable
and clamp clear of the battery terminal.
4. Undo the positive clamp, and lift the cable
and clamp clear of the battery terminal.
5. Undo the battery clamp and lift the battery
clear of the vehicle

And for Charging the vehicle battery

1. Disconnect the battery and remove it from
the vehicle.
2. Connect the battery charger in accordance
with the charger manufacturer's
instructions.
3. Once the charge is complete switch off the
power to the charger.
4. Disconnect the charger cables from the
battery.
5. Allow the battery to stand for an hour
before connecting to the vehicle. This will
allow any explosive gasses to dissipate,
and reduce the risk of explosion.

Also from the manual

CAUTION: After switching off the ignition, wait for 2 minutes
before disconnecting the battery. Failure to wait for 2 minutes will
damage the navigation computer.

You can use bungee cables to hold the neg- then pos+ terminals up and out of the way. Hook the bungee hooks to the hood or away from the battery itself. And don't remove the nuts holding the terminals fully, just loosen and twist/wiggle off.

I have charged mine on the car connected up without any problems ,just using a cheap Aldi charger.

I charge mine in the car every now & then, basically due to small trips & lack of use when at home.

OP may not have access to power.

If it is simply about trickle charging stick a 10 watt solar panel inside the windscreen. Make sure it has a diode. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

OP is in a tower block flat - does he hang a very long extension lead out of his bedroom window

Assuming that a 100 ft. Extension cord out the window isn’t viable

We didn't have power in the garage up to a couple of years ago. I have 30, 20 & 10 metre heavy duty leads which I used to vacuum the car etc.

Neighbours forget to pay the electricity & it was a few days to get it turned back on, so I ran a few leads around the building for their fridge.


Assie plug 240volt 15amp 60m 4mm² for high loads & the resistance over this length (the 10amp plugged lead is more expensive for some reason)

On the subject of cable length. A friend some years ago was buying an intercom system to work between buildings on his farm, it used a cable (no wireless) between the units. It was a run of about 100yds so he enquired as too whether the units would work over that distance. The reply was "oh yes, you see the wires are so thin that there is nothing to stop the electricity"

It's the future,electric cars and long power leads.this morning I saw a big BMW plug in at an Aldi car park.the power cable went under the front end over a fence 10 feet down the river bank then up a wall in through a what looked like a toilet window into a cafe there's always a way.i will try to get a photo.there must be some health and safety issues ?

That image was widely circulated a few years ago, I believe it was actually on a BMW photo shoot for the i3 promo, the place was a private test track in Germany somewhere. Regards

You must know somebody with off road parking & use there electricity save all the bother of removing the battery + I would not fancy taking a bloody battery up a tower block
