2014 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

Time to change the Cambelt

Hi

I am approaching the time when I need to replace the Cambelt and associated parts, as well as the serpentine belt and bearings, there are various suppliers Gates, Dayco, SKF and Land Rover Genuine parts. LR are more than twice the price of the others and I suspect one of the others supply's them, does anyone who has recently done this have any preferred brand and any tips for doing the job would be appreciated.

Gates are the OEM for JLR branded timing belts. Just not with the price tag that the JLR Box commands.

What Sperly said but you won't go wrong with any of the known makes you've already mentioned. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

I queried my indie mechanic last year when he did mine using a Gates - it was very unusual as he always strongly advises I pay for original parts as I do 20,000+ miles a year and run my cars up to 180,000 miles - he told me he’d used the Gates part because they supply LR... so it would literally be paying more for the same... good enough for me! Lexus RX450H - 500 mile a week commuter- I just couldn’t trust in a newer RRS or DS for that….
2009 Freelander 2 HSE... 155K miles, we’ve done 135k of those, has done brilliantly on the commute and staying firmly put as car two in the household
2002 Jaguar XK8 Coupe... fun, fast, ours for 12 years and owes us nothing - so staying with us too…

Any advice on where best to source the Gates kit? 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Hi you can get Gates Cambelt kit (inc water pump, tensioner and idler bearing) off eBay part number KP25633XS for under £88

On the subject of changing belts, I have read that they now need changing every 7 ( seven) years but would that still be the case with only 52k on Florrie?

It is 10 years or 144,000 miles for an SD4.
Confirmed by my specialist today.

Don’t Gates guarantee their belts it fitted by a certified garage

Please note that service intervals always represent the maximum time and distance that should exist between servicing. Driving style and conditions may necessitate earlier servicing as indicated by the notifications on your instrument panel.
SERVICE ITEMS
Check operation of all lamps, horns and warning indicators.
Check operation of Windshield and headlight wipers and washer jets.
Check operation of park brake.
Renew pollen filter.
Check tyre pressures, condition, tread depth, signs of uneven wear and suitability (including spare).
Inspect brake pads for wear, calipers for leaks and disks for condition.
Check and top-up clutch and PAS fluid levels and screen washer reservoirs.
Check brake fluid level is between Min and Max. Refer to the workshop manual for more information.
Drain fuel filter water trap.
Check/top up coolant level.
Renew camshaft drive belt, tensioner and idler pulley.
Check/top up windscreen washer reservoir level.
Renew engine oil and filter.
Reset service indicator.
Endorse service record.
Ensure that all service actions have been carried out and that there are no recall schedules.
Report any unusual features of vehicle condition and additional work required.

Land Rover could be wrong though!

Steve and Mikey I know the sadly missed Yorkie Bob first said about the change from 10 to 7 year issue.

I think there’s two things to consider. Wear on the belt, pulleys, tensioner & water pump and age deterioration on the belt. We also have a Golf diesel and they have a ruddy great thick timing belt. Many other cars are 8/10 years or 80/100,000 miles. The Golf is recommended to be changed complete with tensioner and pump after 4 years irrespective of mileage. We only do about 8,000 miles a year in it. I’ve changed the belt and associated parts twice since we’ve had it. All parts appear in perfect condition. I could take a chance but in the back of my mind I’m thinking, what if.........? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
