United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 i6 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

We had an Audi Q3 from new for three years before the i3, basically the same drivetrain as VW/Skoda/SEAT etc, we bought it as we need a higher seating position for ingress/egress and it turned out to be one of the best cars we have ever had, totally reliable, economical (for a diesel 2L 4X4) quick and drove great.

Nothing like a FL2 of course.....and the 4X4 system was only really good for on road use, might have been better with better tyres for off road/field use.

I am afraid VW interiors do absolutely nothing for us, our best friends have a new Tiguan and it’s trim is great quality but oh so boring and just plain.

Volvo looks a good alternative but getting pricey once some decent bits are screwed on, I’ve driven several DS and found them really nice to drive and a very pleasant interior trim, would only consider a petrol/hybrid though. Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

We had the dual clutch auto on the Audi and it was brilliant, and despite all the nay sayers it was smooth, responsive and far better than a normal slush box. Regards

We have a Seat Leon Cupra with the 7 speed DSG and i can confirm that the gearbox is superb with lightening fast up and down shifts... But i still prefer driving the FL2 even though the 6 speed auto can be a bit ponderous. Thumbs Up 94 Disco 300 TDI Gone

If you think that a Freelander 2 Aisin box is ponderous, try the God-awful 9 Speed Getrag box that is in a Disco Sport diesel......ponderous is not the word, more like dangerously wayward. On the diesel, it's the second biggest complaint after oil dilution....(fortunately my petrol doesn't suffer either of these)

Sort of off topic and on topic.

When the Morris Minor stopped production a fan of the vehicle commissioned his own 'New' vehicle, by getting a garage to build him a New Morris Minor from ALL NEW PARTS.

Here is the MMOwners Club discussing it.

There's a 110 for sale on Auto Trader, newly assembled in 2019 exactly the same way.

Ten quid shy of £60k, for those who are interested.....

Quite like the box in the FL2 but then it’s never “pushed” just used as a cruiser car, of course the box is the same as used in our Lexus RX we had for 12 years......I won’t list what went wrong with that car.......oh OK......new rear silencer box at 11 years old (Mrs BB reversed into a short post and bent the rear tailpipe fracturing the weld to the box) that’s it. Regards

Does the petrol DS use a different box then? Regards

See I quite like the DS box - in the D240, I wonder, if there are different software profiles for the same box for different applications - would make sense. The FL2 always seemed "steady", you would put your foot down and it felt as if the car said "really!" then gathered up speed and away she went. The Full fat Disco I have just been loaned on the other hand was a delight, The Ewok was nasty, and the DS D180 was just Ok if left in sport mode.

Currently stuck in a Merc GLS350d, very nice 3 litre V6 with a gearbox that is ultra smooth unless you boot it from a standstill, at which point it hunts up and down the box. 22mpg mind you! Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Some of the very early FL2's were 'eating' its clutch, quickly !!

It was found that this was down to placing terrain control to 'sand' and taking off at the lights.

Software change fixed that. Whistle
.

No, same box, but better mapping. The early (64 plate - pre Ingenium) used the same drivetrain as the freelander, and didn't suffer the horrendous lag that the D180 does. It's downright bloody dangerous.

Aha OK....so the early DS petrol uses the Aisin box?

Sorry if I am confusing your answers.

The DS models I have driven so far have only been the “bigger/powerful” engined versions and seemed to work really well. Regards

David
