If you decide the cambelt, be aware of this.

so why the difference? Is there a cheaper belt in the later models or is it something to do with a subtle get out clause for extended warranties on cars under 10 years old ? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I think that you might be bang on the money with that statement Dorset. The car is long out of production and I should imagine that the warranty administrators can't wait to see the back of it in 5 years time. It wouldn't surprise me if the renewal premiums creep up enough to make it an unviable option in terms of extended warranty. |

Looking purely what it would cost if either failed, I’d say go for the timing belt and water pump. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Higher pressure on the common rail on EDC17 system put more load on the cambelt which is driving the HPFP (high pressure fuel pump). |

They may have had more failures in service than the predicted failure pattern so just shortened the service life a bit. Regards David Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me...... Please let me know if anything in my post offends you, as I may wish to offend you again...... |

This would make my mind up. Especially as there is confusion over the lifespan for your model year. When I bought mine it was coming up 10 years old and had no cambelt change in the history, so that was the first thing I sought to get done. That engine is an interference engine, which means if your cambelt goes you have a very good chance of the valves hitting the pistons. As has been said many times before, change the water pump at the same time. If that goes, you have a good chance of getting the same result and you have done almost all the labour to get to it changing the belt. There is a kit price keeping costs down (well unless you use a main agent of course). £375 for mine at a local indie, November was too cold for me to take a day off and get the spanners out. Edit. I notice you are in Sussex. If you aren’t far from Portsmouth, give Smile a call for a price - LR trained techs among other stuff too and will give you a courtesy car in the price too. https://smile-servicing.co.uk/ (No connection, just nearby) |
