I sometimes get a message on my centre screen with a battery symbol and "Switch engine on or system will shut down in 3 minutes". This just started happening recently. Does this mean my battery is starting to die?

Possibly but I would give it a good charge and see how it goes,do you double lock ?

Thanks SYFL2. Yes, I always double-lock but only do short journeys these days which always makes me worry about how well the battery is getting re-charged.

I think that is just the normal time-out.

Mine shows "Battery is low - please start engine" or something like that in a red box if the battery is really getting low.

It's a normal warning if you're using the radio for some time with the engine not running, it's just to prevent the battery from getting too low.

If however you're getting it while the engine is running, that suggests you may have a problem, trouble is it can take maybe half an hour or more of normal driving to fully recharge so if you're only doing short journeys you are in danger of taking more out of the battery, starting, lights, heater etc than you're putting back in.

If a decent overnight charge doesn't sort it then that would suggest a new battery is in order.

Thanks all. I did wonder if it was a normal message but I can't remember seeing it until recently. Maybe I'm just not very observant (true!) but it does seem to come and go. I haven't noticed any issues with starting but I don't recall the stop/start having kicked in for quite some time. Having said that it's winter - with heater, wipers etc. on then that's probably to be expected.

Might be worth you investing in a ctek charger if you only do short journeys, I give my battery a overnight charge once a month over the winter period.

It's well worth keeping a good battery in the car, as the FL2 needs a good voltage to supply its many electronic systems.

I found that once my battery started to get old I started to get odd (random) error messages at or around start-up time.

In both my FL2 and my Evoque, I changed the battery at about 5 years old and before they were due. I reasoned that for the £20 or £30 I would have saved from running them until they let me down, it wouldn’t be worth the aggro I’d get from the wife if she got stuck out somewhere! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

The clutch failed spectacularly last week so when I get the car back I'll change the battery as well!!! Oh, the joys...

It may be my imagination, but to me it seemed that as far as the 'Battery Management' messages are concerned the 'Battery Management Control Unit' somehow estimates battery reserves and adjusts messages to suit. Not only that but after changing to a new battery it takes a while to adjust to the new capacity available.


In my earlier post, I had random messages from other controllers (including transmission) on start up, it was these that stopped after new battery fitted.

I guess they were caused by poor power supply during 'ramp up' of controllers giving sequential and other errors.

That was the reason why I replaced the battery on my first FL2. Every time I checked for fault codes with the Nanocom, I got repeated "Comms error" messages from many of the modules, I was not having problems with it starting except in zero temperature conditions, (that in any case was due to faulty glow plugs,) it was more of a pre-emptive action to prevent future problems.

Ditto with the jag. If there isn’t enough voltage to enable all systems, erratic error codes and symptoms prevail.
Changing the battery at the onset of any diminished capability is cheap insurance to me too. Guy Pensa
