Automatic gear shift knob removal 2010 LR2/Freelander2

I need to replace the worn automatic gear shift boot leather cover. There are a number of videos and instructions posted. I cannot get the knob to come off. I have followed the instructions below. I was able to turn rotate the lock mechanism ccw but not slide the boot down. Should I tap the leather cover down with a screwdriver and hammer? I do not want to break anything. Any suggestions?

1. First, you need to remove the shift boot from the gear shifter. Rotate the lock mechanism (not visible, located at the base of the shifter head underneath the leather) counterclockwise to unlock the boot cover, and slide the boot down, exposing the base of the shifter head.

I was finally able to detach the leather boot from the knob plastic connectors without breaking anything.

The white plastic cylinder in the shifter shaft is broken at the top where it connects to the knob assembly. The shifter continues to work. What is the fix?

A new or second hand shift selector will be your only option, as I doubt spares are available.

It should still work as it is but you will be able to move the lever without using the button!

Good luck with it.
