Engine noise on startup

Can I just ask if my engine should be so noisy on startup, I have a 2.2 Diesel and it is very noisy when started from cold, especially if the temperature is below 4 degrees, when the car gets warm it is much quieter, in fact sometimes it can't be heard at all, but even when warm if the engine is under load (heavy acceleration or going up hill) I get a noise like you would get from a worn valvetrain, I know it can't be that as it has a timing belt, but it's kind of like a loud sewing machine, is this normal?

I do know that it could be duff glow plugs, it just seems very noisy.

The 2,2 HDI is very noisy actually ...
It's hard to figure out the noise degree you are referring to through your post. Maybe a video could be helpful
Or maybe "compare" the engine noise with another FL2 if you can

As above, it sounds very gruff and agricultural, particularly when cold. Bear in mind that the soundproofing design (as well as the engine) are from an era some 15 years ago...things have moved on a bit since then.

I had a Disco Sport D180 Ingenium loaner once for 3 days and the engine noise difference between the two was night and day.
