Engine carbon clean

Hi all, Yesterday I had an engine carbon clean, from the company with the same name.

I took it for a drive afterwards and noticed a big improvement in acceleration, the company says that I will get back more power and could see a fuel consumption improvement of up to 15%.

Has anybody on elese on the forum had this service done before and have they notice any big improvements afterwards?

Is carbon build up really an issue on modern engine designs with modern fuels containing detergents and fully synth low ash oil?
I had the head off my Td5 Disco at about 160K miles, nothing worth talking about needing cleaned.
Even my old A series engined Mini with 80k miles on the clock (no idea if just 80k or second time around) but even it was nowhere near as bad as I expected although I cant be sure if or when it was last off since only had it since 71k.
My point being, modern fuels and oils are not causing the deposits of old and not many of us spend our weekends taking heads off to 'decoke' as earleir generations of motorists had to. Thumbs Up Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Maybe no carbon in the cylinders Bob, but Diesel engines with a egr system really do coke up in the inlet ports. Also, ring grooves in the pistons can suffer carbon build up preventing the rings from sealing. Maybe that’s what the OP is on about? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I had my engine cleaned at 105K. kept looking at the exhaust to see if any muck was coming out but nothing did. It was as clean as before they started the procedure. Also no boost in power/acceleration etc. Came to e comclusion that i just wasted my cash.

This is why I was asking about the mileage on the OP’s car, very unusual to have excessive carbon build up on modern engines although for sure the EGR system can be a problem on some but not sure these carbon cleaners actually clean the EGR system as much as the pistons/valves etc. Regards

Decades ago I had an engine carbon clean. Head gasket leaked water into one cylinder. It was spotlessly clean. Cheaper to drive in fog to get water through the engine! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hi Boxbrownie. In answer to your question (How many miles has my FL done) it has just passed 52,000 miles.

The main reason that I had the hydrogen carbon cleaning done, was that the engine felt a bit flat with noticeable turbo lag when I accelerated from a slow speed. Since having the engine cleaned, this perceived problem has disappeared completely.

I will have to wait and see if there is any improvement in fuel consumption.

Years ago in the RAF, a decoke was done by dribbling 1 pint of OM-15 aircraft hydraulic oil into the engine. Don't know if it achieved anything other than a huge cloud of exhaust smoke. On one instance the Fire Section turned up with a bowser. 11 GS Bali Blue

I’m sure Redex smells the same as OM 15. I never tasted Redex so cant compare that way.
