Electric brake controller

Hi guys

Sticking this in here as our northern friends don't have such things ...

looking at getting a caravan, but have found that my preferred vans have electric brakes.

What controllers are you using, and what tricks are there to getting them installed in our everything-sensored-or-programmed Freelanders?

Thanks MY11 SD4 SE Auto

I’m going for this one!
Plugs directly into the std LR trailer wiring and is controlled via Bluetooth from your phone so no box or any other hardware needs to be added to the vehicle.
It’s a nice bit of kit!

Hello mate - did you get you air intake from Joao?

I'm looking at Jayco vans which all have electrics fitted. A surprise as they are only light.

Phew. I was looking at the elecbrakes last night - convenient, but they are pricey.

Keep us posted, the caravanner's forum (where I saw them discussed) suggested nothing is truly plug n play. Isn't that the truth! MY11 SD4 SE Auto

Not yet, it’s a little down the “to do list” atm. Plus I’m also waiting for a few other suppliers versions to be released to see what they come up with.
Pricey yes but completely invisible and if you go for the phone app version - no remote needed.
Jayco I’m finding a little overweight so likely a Jurgens for me as I have more spare weight to play with for additions. MY15

Out of curiosity, do you still have mechanical overrun brakes in Australia like we have in the UK. Jules

Mechanical Overrun brakes only allowed up to 2000 GTM.
Anything over 2000 Kgs has to have electric brakes and in some states & territories a “break away” system. MY15

Having just bought a camper trailer on the weekend I am going through the same process. The kids have already asked to borrow it so I'm looking at a portable unit they can use without having to modify their vehicles as well.
The web sites for the major types don't really explain the full details so I'm off the trailer places in Wangara to ask some questions.
I'll let you know the outcome.

It has taken some time but I'm putting some info together.
I finally got to speak to the Elecbrake technical man. The unit draws power from the brake light circuit and the tail light circuit combined to operate the brake magnets. He was a hazy on the details of getting around the issues of upsetting the CANBUS but did add that where there was an auxiliary power circuit the would take power from that and not the tail lights. 'Some' 7 pin connectors have the aux cct on pin 2 but according to my paperwork pin 2 is rear fog lights. I haven't checked that out yet. It could be changed, my van doesn't have rear fogs anyway.
He seemed surprised that the FL2 had a secondary socket that had all the power needed and also stated that Land Rovers in general, particularly the Discos seemed to be wired any which way.
The is some pretty scathing feedback on the Android app to control the brakes, it keep losing the screen although no issues have been recorded with the Apple version. He admitted to the issues and said they were working on it, the problems came from all of the different manufacturerer versions and it should be sorted soon. Even if the screen does drop out the setup parameters to control the brakes are not affected, they still work.

He will be at the Perth Caravan and Camping Show next moth so I'm going to meet with him and see if he is offering any show discounts. He said it was possible.

More to come. Cheers
db

Nothing at the back/tow ecu to worry about involving CAN.

Doesn’t matter if you have single 13 pin LR socket or dual, all same feeds but obviously 2 plugs instead of one.

If you look at the wiring diagrams the difference is the RH/LH taillights. In Europe the LH taillight & RH Tailight/number plate lights are split over 2 pins. In Australia all on one pin but it doesn’t matter as the feed for both ways is from a single feed from the tow ECU.

You have 2 power circuits at your disposal in the rear plug/s. One ignition source and other permanent live both fused. I know where I will be taking power from for the electric brake ECU. I wouldn’t be taking power from any lights circuit.

The LR tow electrical/setup is “top notch”! Don’t let any unfamiliar “sparky” tell you otherwise as they’re only saying it as they’re unfamiliar with the LR electrical and that particularly includes caravan/camper dealers and general auto electric who do their work!

DO NOT for any reason change rear tow plugs for anything other than the LR ones. Changing to the LR 13 pin socket is also an option. The Australian plugs are GARBAGE! The only reason they will want to change your dual or single LR socket is that are familiar with the Australian plug and or your camper/caravan already has the Australian plug! Change the van plug to match LR. Again, the LR plug/s are “top notch”!

I strongly urge you to do you homework, know what’s going on at the rear plug and “tell” them/camper/caravan/electrical person what you want and how to do it otherwise you’ll probably end up with a bodged job! MY15

Thanks for the tips Stuart.
I have found that the 12N socket does have tail lights on pins 5 & 7 and that the Aux power is only found on the 12S socket.
I would also much rather run the brakes off the Aux circuit but that would mean combining the Aux power from 12S into an adaptor from the 12N for all the normal trailer functions for the Elecbrakes.
More thinking required. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.

Simplest way is to change over to single socket that way all is available in the one plug.

Hi Stuart, Ozjeff and others.
Despite your advice Stuart I'm going to change out the LR sockets for a 7 pin aussie standard.
Plugs for the 12S socket are impossible to get and I would still have to combine some of the wires from the 12S and 12N to get the necessary connections for towing a camper / caravan with electric brakes and a fridge.

So my solution is to use the brake (Red), left & right indicators (Yellow & Green), earth return (white) as per standard from the 12N. Join the left & right tail lights (Brown & Black) from the 12N then add the Reversing light wire (Yellow/Brown) and the Live feed (Pink/Blue) to power the electric brakes from the 12S. That means eliminating the fog light connection.

The nominated wire for the fridge connection is stupidly light to run a fridge at the other end of a caravan, so that will be transferred to an Anderson plug with a decent gauge wire and a proper earth.

I noted that the 3 x white wires on the 12N and 12S all come from the same wire further up the loom.

Making these changes will allow me now to use the elecbrake controller and my kids can also borrow the van with only the addition of the Anderson plug to tow and have everything working properly. And no more adaptors!

Cheers all

Sounds good. I have a 7 pin flat connector, much more convenient. Except for the reversing sensors. MY11 SD4 SE Auto
