Can anyone shed any light on whether or not copper grease should be applied to metal contact surfaces when changing brake pads. My Haynes manual says that Land Rover insist not but on all my other cars I applied grease as a matter of course. Your thoughts please.

Hi used it on mine with no problems used a rubber kind grease on the slide pins

Always used copper grease on pads and pins and on wheel bolts and alloy wheel mating surfaces. I helped the lady next door a few weeks ago with a puncture and had real problem getting the wheel off as the alloy was stuck to the hub. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Quite a confusing topic .

The most common alternative to copper grease is Ceratec which is sold by brake manufacturers under Mintex, Textar and Pagid brands.
Mintex claim Copper slip is poor but is rather vague as to why Ceratec is better exactly ie interferewnce with ABS systems - but how ?

I tried downloading datasheets on Ceratec - most have little useful information eg effect of rubber seals, but it seems its melting point is 1000c. The lack of definitive product information is disconcerting.

My tin of copper grease says its good for 1150c and can be used for brake parts. Effect on rubber not mentioned.

My concern would be

DISADVANTAGES OF COPPER GREASE
Can Damage Rubber Components (o-rings, gaiters, seals)


I use a Silicone based ceramic filled lubricant for the sliding pins that pass through the rubber bushings

I won't use anything that is petroleum based if it will contact rubber parts.
