In my case i replaced the relay for the starter motor as a maintenance item (the contacts do wear out)

As for the other difficulties that you described I was fortunate enough not to have any of those issues.


Based on your comment that water got into the starter motor you may want to look at getting one of these, I don't have one but I thought about.


LR005926 - this is an extended breather tube for the starter motor


I noticed it the other day when I was looking at the Lrcat link http://new.lrcat.com/#!/12111/57488/58321/4684/58328


If you do get one please post pictures and your opinion if it would help with the water in the starter.

Hello, that pin/paperclip is for bonnet, for old car, bonnet open/close sensor may damaged
some people may invest on buying new sensor, some other simply connect using that paperclip to always tell the ECU that bonnet is closed.

So you will not receive "bonnet opened" in your dashboard which is fine on most the cases to inspect it manually
The problem when this sensor is damaged, sometime (very annoying during night) the car is in locked state it send signal that bonnet is opened although it's not, which causing horn alarm to be triggerred

For your car problem, most likely it's starter, replace it
part no: LR029180 (Starter for LR2) it's Bosch product, get it OEM if you love things more expensive, else get it from Bosch directly

Replacement is not difficult can be done yourself

@p_gill, picked this up today, will install some time next week when it warms up a bit. A little pricy for molded rubber but it's a JLR genuine part made in the UK.

Let us know how difficult it is to attach to the starter and where you attach the other end of the tube.

The biggest expense for parts like this is the design work and the tooling to make the part.

Land Rover paid for all of that.

I am surprised that they didn’t just make it standard.

The cost in volume production would have been very small.

I just saw a empty clip by the breather hose for the transmission.

And the size looks perfect for the hose you bought.

Now I am even more disappointed that my LR2 didn’t come with this hose.

The next time I place an order at the dealer I’m getting the hose.

I've ordered mine yesterday. £21 . But it's special order, so I'll have a few days wait before I can pick it up.

A quick update, I did install this Friday at my buddies shop. I had limited time and could not locate the breather for the transmission so I ended up routing this towards the rad fan shroud and securing it to the fan wire loom temporarily. Also proactively ran an earth to one of the starter bolts. When I do my next oil change I will reroute it once I find that darn tranny breather empty clip!!!

I will look at mine for that clip as I did look over that breather which I thought was for the PTU or front diff. I missed that clip. Thank you Paul! I will reroute on the next oil change.

The big breather tube may be for the PTU and not the transmission.
