After 7 almost fault-free years, 55000 miles in pure luxury, and arguably the most reliable and brilliant vehicle that I have owned in well over 30 years, my beloved Freelander 2 HSE Lux has left for retirement down to the South Coast. It will be mainly spending its time in Scotland (Dumfries & Galloway), as its new owners have a holiday home up there, so keep an eye out for her.

She has cost me the grand total of a split turbo hose back in 2016 and a set of tyres and brake pads. Nothing else, other than routine Servicing. Utterly brilliant.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all concerned for a fantastic forum, the knowledge base on here is invaluable. I have been on here for nearly 8 years, so don't let the pseudonym fool you.Some of the laughs, arguments, full-on rows and general banter are quite memorable. In paricular the Heated Steering Wheel disagreement which was legendary when someone's avatar caused much mirth......I still laugh to this day about it 😂😂😂

In particular, to some of the elder founding members, (I don't know if they still drop in or keep in touch anymore)and in no particular order, Taz, npinks, chicken george, AD918384675783992, Yorky Bob, Athelstani, LR Nut, Andy131, Fred, and many many others. Its been a blast.

The new custodian of my old trusty steed will be signing up to this excellent forum in the not too distant, and I daresay that you will all make him feel as welcome as you did me way back in 2012 when I arrived. He is a retired Marine Diesel Engine engineer, so knows a fair bit already, and eventually saw the light and sold his Audi Q7 to buy a "proper" 4x4.

If that is what you prefer, then you should get one.

For me personally I can't justify the cost.

If I sold my LR2 i might get $5,000

And to buy something new that I would like more would be over $50,000

The problem as I see it is that I can't justify that significant expense for a vehicle that I will like slightly better.


Maybe if my LR2 wasn't so reliable.

Or if it wasn't so comfortable.

Or if it wasn't so capable.

Or if it wasn't so fun to drive.


I blame Land Rover if they would have just built a terrible vehicle then I would be happy to move on.

The root of the problem is that my LR2 is too good.

I'm never selling!!!!!!

As I keep saying, it's a Ford, design by Ford, built by Ford, whilst Ford owned LR.

Unfortunately, punitive legislation in the UK will see diesel dead very soon, and my journey pattern has changed. I no longer trawl motorways, racking up 60 miles a day, just a short hop to the local Town and back for work...so after an 18 year love affair with diesel, it's back to petrol.

Governments eh?

ps: as for the Ford comment above.... It's obvious to me that the current "Design Director" at JLR took umbrage that Ford produced such a fantastic vehicle to succeed his original design (FL1), whilst he was on a hiatus with Buick....it must have really put his nose so far out of joint that he chose to bin it in its entirety and create something completely different, so that he could take all the plaudits for it in 2014 (despite it being mainly a FL2 under the skin)
Whilst I hope that it's as competent and good off-road as the FL2, methinks it's more suited to Tarmac than mud and ruts...

Rubbish. Too much scare mongering in the press.

Now is a good time to buy diesel cars, unless you live in a Labour run area.

Both my cars are diesel, and will not be selling either for many years to come.
