England 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Galway Green

When I rebuilt a second-hand diff that I bought last year, I noticed that the depth of the pinion seal was exactly the same as the socket I purchased to do my rear wheel bearings. i.e. 90 mm as shown:


 FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green
Evoque SD4 Auto Blue.
FL1 HSE TD4 Manual Black - Gone.
RR Classic V8 EFI - Gone

2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Dynamic Manual Caspian Blue

I haven't had time to sketch out all the dimensions of the factory supplied pinion seal tool yet, but it presses the seal down to exactly 10mm below to outer lip.

I notice the repair is to your 2014 FL2 ? I was of the understanding that Land Rover addressed the diff fault on 2012 & later cars ? Unless I have been misinformed.

Sad to say, but later diffs seems also to suffer. I have opened a 2013 diff with approx 70k miles where the pinion bearing was knackered.

In my apprenticeship days when axles were always rebuilt, we used to use something called 'engineers blue'. Still available, Google it. Using this, from memory, we would set the preload on the crown wheel and pinion bearings, set the backlash and then check check the meshing of the gears. Depending on the pattern of meshing we would then correct it by moving the pinion in or out or the crown wheel carrier in or out. Can’t remember much as it was 40 odd years ago but it was interesting to do and satisfying when you got it all right. You were looking for meshing like this:

Given that very late FL2s (14 onwards ?) shared a lot of parts with the Evoque does anyone know if the Evoque has the same rear diff problem? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Doesn’t seem to be. It could be because most, if not all, Evoques have the modified pinion bearings or just simply that they haven’t been around as long or there aren’t as many on the road compared to FL2’s. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

This is a great thread! Wish I had seen it a few days ago before my mechanic replaced the bearings on my rear diff.
He had to fabricate a tool like the one you made by welding 2 sockets together to get it deep enough....

Great work. There's no way I could have done this DIY.

Yes if you speak to Austin @ Bell engineering he will confirm that the evoque does suffer from the same diff problem as the Freelander.

Hi all

Has anyone had ANY PROBLEMS with the Gen 4 Haldex software update

i have fitted new 4 new bearing again, plus Haldex pump filter clean and new Haldex filter and oil

I thought as being as the third lot of bearing i should have the update

The haldex worked fine before but now its playing up since the update

slipping, groaning and banging in

my thoughts are worn friction plates not accepting the softer engagement

ANY THOUGHTS PLEASE

doe anyone know where i can get new Haldex friction plates from (frighten to ask LR)
