Fitted an alloy bullbar to MY11

Hi guys,
Finally got an alloy bullbar on to the Freeo. I've been planning this for quite a while. The experimenting took a few days, once I got a handle on what I needed to do it went together in a long weekend.

I figured it would be doable once I saw that lovely beefy bumper reinforcing bar.

It required a bit of cutting and modifying which goes against my normal 'reversible' modification philosophy. However the only things that were cut are easily replaced and bolted back on.

Let me know if I should post some photos of the secret steps here or put them in my gallery.

hahaha I saw your "thumbs down" post Largered.

So tell me more about the considerations that I may have overlooked.

It is very ugly but it's a much cheaper route than a bespoke bar - no one here does them anymore.

The bar is actually fairly light (for a full bar). It essentially replaces a section of the bumper reinforcement. It attaches to the front bulkhead with eight very substantial M12 bolts.

I guess there's a chance that the sheet metal could tear from fatigue over corrugated roads.

Definitely a chance a collision will rearrange the car. MY11 SD4 SE Auto

Over in the UK they are frowned upon!

city vehicles (Chelsea Tractors - Range Rovers and LandRover) fitted them for their aggressive look.
the UK .... BANNED them on new builds, years ago.

a step backwards in Oz ???

Pretty sure they are needed over there, not for the school run admittedly but any where in country.....yes. Regards

That was quite a hit.

I don't know how many roos I've hit - 4 perhaps? Definitely better to hit one with a bar than without. Also hit a wombat, goanna, snake, horse, birds, rabbits, etc etc etc.

I was on a walk on Sunday, saw a wallaby. That was maybe 10km from the CBD, over 30km from the city outskirts. There's a lot of bush in Sydney.

But yes, any rural driving any time of day you will see roos at the moment - hot bitumen roads raise any moisture in the soil, plants grow, roos eat the plants, roo sees a car, roo decides it needs to be on the other side of the road - I mean the other side - no mum's on that side - no she's come to this side - oops I tripped - I better hurry - BANG. Really, really good idea in Australia, it’s just that they’re an equally bad idea in the UK.

This one (on an AUS car) really looks the part

A million or so camels & stacks of buffalos! Plenty of stay cattle on the roads.

Many years ago I spoke to a road train driver. The heavy bull bar had been pushed back into the bodywork. He apparently had hit a large kangaroo. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
